All right, I’ll cut to the chase: Cheap03xD is mainly so cheap because the PCB falls within a 10 x 10 cm footprint. The point was to make a very affordable keyboard — all the parts come to ~40 Euro (~$47). So it would seem that [Lander03xD_] succeeded.

Those are MMD Princess silent switches, which I wouldn’t choose, but [Lander03xD_] is taking this board to the office, so I get it. They sure are a nice shade of pink, anyway, and they go really well with the pastels of the DSA keycaps and the bezel.
One cool thing to note is that the PCBs are reversible, like the ErgoDox. This isn’t [Lander03xD_]’s first board, and it won’t be the last.
Now, let’s talk batteries. [Saixos] pointed out that the design doesn’t appear to include a protection circuit. In case you can’t tell from where you’re sitting, those are nice!nano clones that [Lander03xD_] is using, and they expect a protection circuit.
[Lander03xD_] is going to look through the docs and see what’s what. The goal is not to have any daughter boards, so this may take some rethinking.
So Arc Raiders is this cool-looking, stripe-logoed, multiplayer extraction shooter that just came out a couple of months ago for all the platforms. It’s not something I could personally play as it’s way too immersive (read: time-consuming), but it definitely looks good, much like this keyboard that [RunRunAndyRun] designed to play it.

No matter; just make a new one. Why not? This rustic beauty runs on the Waveshare RP2040 Zero. The case was 3D printed on a Prusa Mk4, which you’d never know unless you blew up the picture. And then [RunRunAndyRun] gave it that nice patina using Panduro hobby acrylics and a bit of weathering powder.

Historical Clackers: the Keystone
Image via The Antikey Chop This spartan beauty was named after the state in which it was made, Pennsylvania. Manufactured between 1898 and 1903, the Keystone was invented by William Prehn Quentell.
Quentell was living in Kansas City, MO when he first applied for a patent, and later moved to the east coast. At the time, the machine was nameless. The patent looks nothing like the finished product pictured here, but the genesis of the key feature of this “poor man’s Hammond” is there — the swinging type sector.
What this means is that the Keystone has its type on a half wagon wheel, which is evident in the patent drawing. The glyphs are molded around the outside edge of the wheel, which gets rotated into the correct position with each keystroke. This type wheel could be easily changed out for different fonts. Image via Google Patents To imprint the paper, a spring-driven hammer strikes from behind, pushing the paper and ribbon against the type wheel. The paper is loaded into a cylindrical holder in the rear, and unfurls as one types.
So, why was it a poor man’s Hammond? Well, for one, the patent image looks like a Hammond. But the poor part is felt the hardest in the makeup of the typewriter.
In the early Keystone examples, the carriage rails were made of pig iron. Why? It’s a simple case of lateral integration. The factory that was retrofitted to manufacture the machine had previously been the Lochiel iron mill, a producer of pig iron. They were just using up old stock, I imagine.
The Keystone featured two Shift keys on the left, one for Caps and one for Figures. It was a comparatively inexpensive at $40, and then later, $35 (around $1,200 today).
Production was supposed to begin in May of 1898. But by June of ’99, “the company has been unable to fill the orders which are piling up at the works.” Sounds like your average Kickstarter. Quentell was already working on his next project by 1902, the Postal typewriter.
Finally, a Keyboard That Charges Your Phone
So this article mainly centers on the new little Blackberry-esque number from Clicks which might just be my next phone, except that it doesn’t actually telephone. Clicks is meant to be your second phone, the one you use for emailing and such. You can pre-order it for $399 if you put a $199 deposit down before February 27th. If you decide to drop the full four hundo as an early bird, you’ll get two additional back covers, which slightly change the look of the phone. It uses a 2,150 mAh battery and attaches via MagSafe or Qi2, but it also can be used with the case on. When paired with a smart TV, you just use it by itself. Honestly, it looks kind of hard to type on without the phone for support. But I don’t use the smart features of my TV, so whatever.

Prosecuzione ideale della Civiltà delle macchine che dal 1953 al 1979 ha contribuito a modellare la cultura dell’innovazione nel nostro paese, aspira oggi come allora a intrecciare il dialogo tra scienza, tecnologica e sperimentazione letteraria e artistica con un focus specifico sull’ontologia del dato. Proprio quel dato che consente scelte e previsioni, il dato che ci anticipa e rappresenta nel mondo digitale e che è il carburante delle nuove macchine IA è il centro e al centro della rivista. Diretta da Jaime D’Alessandro, storica penna tecnologica dell’Espresso e di Repubblica, è un contenitore di alcune delle migliori firme del pensiero contemporaneo in lingua italiana, Floridi, Taddeo, Benanti, Aresu, e del giornalismo tech come Iacona, Aluffi, Sterling e altri. I primi quattro numeri della rivista, frutto di un progetto della Fondazione Leonardo, direttrice generale la giornalista Helga Cossu, sono stati dedicati a quattro grandi temi d’attualità: lo spazio, la mente, gli archivi, l’IA e i digital twins.
La rivista è molto curata, sia dal punto di vista grafico, con una chiara impronta visiva, sia per i contenuti.
Il primo numero è una parata delle stelle femminili protagoniste della ricerca spaziale; il secondo, è incentrato sugli effetti psicologici della tecnologia e dei social network; il terzo si fonda sul rapporto tra analogico e digitale per parlare di archivi. Particolarmente interessanti sono le riflessioni di Paolo Benanti in questo numero tre quando parla dell’importanza della memoria selettiva, cioè di quel processo che è umano ma non macchinico, di ritenere solo quello che serve, come accadeva con le biblioteche. Benanti fa anche un riferimento importante all’etica dell’IA quando ricorda che gli strumenti, tutti gli strumenti, non sono neutri, ma forme d’ordine e disposizioni di potere. Nella rivista numero 4 va letta l’intervista a Lucilla Sioli, direttrice dell’ufficio europeo per l’IA. Detto per inciso è quella graficamente più bella (recupera le copertine di Urania). Ma è sempre nel numero 3 che troviamo la chicca: una storia a fumetti dell’impareggiabile Milo Manara basato sulla storia della biblioteca meccanica di Jorge Luis Borges. Chissà se quell’utopia bella e terribile della macchina da scrivere universale, oggi rappresentata dall’IA generativa, potrà mai predirci il futuro dentro a un libro. Accetteremmo anche qualche errore di sintassi.

Committee News – No major updates from IT Committee. Outreach Committee met and discussed different ideas to help state parties, including business cards and in-person recruiting. Platform committee has been asked to explore both the idea of term limits and #ProjectNoCap, the latter being a Mr. Beat started project to uncap the United States House of Representatives.
Massachusetts – Preparations are actively being made for the 2026 Pirate National Conference in Boston. The conference will be hybrid with both in-person and online options to attend. The conference will take prior to the FIFA World Cup, and given Boston will play host, it is advised that those looking to attend book early before prices begin to rise. The conference will begin June 6th and is expected to conclude on the 7th. We WILL be on a boat for the conference.

Пиратскую партию России на Генассамблее представляли члены Федерального Штаба ППР Александр Исавнин, Григорий Дизер, Валерия Клестова и член Контрольно-ревизионной комиссии ППР Николай Воронов.
Ключевое приветствие и вступительное слово произнесла Лилия Кайра Куюмджу (председатель Пиратской партии Германии), подчеркнув ценности свободы, цифровых прав и международного сотрудничества внутри Пиратского движения.
Поступили отчёты от руководящих органов PPI: Совет (Board) — обзор деятельности за 2025 год, участие в международных форумах и конференциях, деятельность в ООН. Казначей (Treasurer), Арбитражный суд (Court of Arbitration) и Независимый аудитор (Lay Auditor) — отчёты и замечания.
Ассамблея рассмотрела и утвердила бюджет PPI на 2026 год.
На Генассамблее приняты две важных для мирового пиратского движения резолюции:
1. Солидарность с иранским движением за свободу и против избирательной цензуры в сфере защиты цифровых прав

Народная партия Ирана подтверждает свою непоколебимую солидарность с иранским народом, призывая к немедленному включению Корпуса стражей исламской революции (КСИР) в список террористических организаций на территории всего ЕС, введению всеобъемлющих санкций против должностных лиц режима и активной поддержке диаспорных сетей, противостоящих влиянию режима и цифровым репрессиям.

Мы осуждаем все формы цензуры, включая систематические цифровые репрессии иранского режима и западные механизмы «доверенной маркировки» в рамках DSA, которые позволяют осуществлять избирательный контроль над контентом, как это показано в деле HateAid. Необходимо обеспечить, чтобы ИИ служил инструментом расширения прав и возможностей человека, а не механизмом социального контроля или непрозрачного корпоративного доминирования. Мы признаем следующие основные принципы:
1. Прозрачность алгоритмов: Любая система искусственного интеллекта, внедряемая в государственном секторе или используемая для принятия важных частных решений (например, в сфере кредитования, трудоустройства или жилищного обеспечения), должна подлежать независимой государственной проверке. Базовая логика и обучающие наборы данных должны быть прозрачными, доступными и проверяемыми.
2. Право на участие человека в процессе принятия решения: Ни одно решение, коренным образом влияющее на правовой статус или средства к существованию человека, не должно приниматься исключительно автоматизированной системой. Граждане должны иметь юридически закрепленное право на содержательную проверку со стороны человека.
3. Запрет массового биометрического наблюдения: Мы выступаем за глобальный запрет на биометрическую идентификацию в режиме реального времени (например, распознавание лиц) в общественных местах как государственными, так и частными организациями.
4. Открытый исходный код как обязательное условие: для обеспечения безопасности и общественного доверия системы искусственного интеллекта, заказываемые или используемые правительствами, должны основываться на свободном и открытом программном обеспечении (FOSS).
Предлагаемые действия Генеральная Ассамблея поручает новому 16-му составу Совета воссоздать Постоянный комитет по политике в области ИИ. Этот комитет будет координировать международные усилия по продвижению этих принципов на уровне ООН и ЕС, особенно с Европейской пиратской партией, стремясь обеспечить их интеграцию в формирующиеся глобальные рамки и правила.
Также проведено несколько выборных сессий: — Заместителем председателя Борды избран Грегори Энгельс, член Пиратской партии Германии, уроженец Москвы и наш большой друг; — членами Борды избраны на двухлетний срок Себастьян Кроне, Карлос Поло и член Федерального Штаба ППР Григорий Дизер; — альтернативными членами Борды избраны Барт Оверкамп, Лилия Кайра Куюмджу, Томас Гал и выдвинутый ППР член ПП Германии Numero6; — аудиторами избраны Ноам Кузар и член КРК ППР Николай Воронов; — также 6 членами CoA избраны Миа Утц, Александр Колер, Охад Шем Тов, Майлз Уитикер.
Кроме того, было принято заявление о солидарности с ПП США в связи с ситуацией в США: Пиратский Интернационал выражает свою поддержку Пиратской партии США в связи с недавним убийством Рене Николь Гуд сотрудником Федеральной иммиграционной и таможенной службы (ICE). Пусть в Соединенных Штатах или любой другой стране не будет убежища для врагов свободы.
Пиратская партия России является членом-учредителем и неотъемлемой частью Пиратского Интернационала, что мы в том числе закрепили в Уставе и Программе. Martha era dentro da mesi. Aveva messo in piedi profili fasulli di donne ariane gestiti da chatbot e racconta che quegli uomini si erano innamorati. Mentre gli utenti flirtavano con l’intelligenza artificiale, lei raccoglieva dati e informazioni, trasformando un ambiente pensato per far incontrare persone in un dispositivo che espone identità e reti. Dalle sue analisi è emerso che la piattaforma era gestita da una persona con legami con ambienti suprematisti bianchi. WhiteDate veniva venduto come sito di appuntamenti, ma gli utenti erano quasi tutti uomini: il punto non pare la ricerca di partner, ma la costruzione di un network suprematista travestito da Tinder per ariani.
I membri della cosiddetta razza superiore si sono fatti fregare lasciando il sito senza protezioni adeguate. Un’infrastruttura che classifica, aggrega e rende operativi dati sensibili produce una forma di soft power che, se progettata male, si ribalta in una falla boomerang. Il Power Ranger Rosa non si è fermata alla distruzione: ha reso consultabili su okstupid.lol informazioni filtrate, mentre il dataset completo è stato condiviso attraverso canali dedicati a giornalisti e ricercatori. Esporre quei dati significa raccontare le persone: chi c’è dentro, come si descrive, come si colloca nello spazio, cosa cerca, a quale oggetto storico dichiara appartenenza.
WhiteDate stava in una galassia di siti tematici: WhiteDate (dating), WhiteChild (famiglia, ancestry e donazioni di sperma/uova per suprematisti bianchi) e WhiteDeal (networking professionale per razzisti).
Ed è interessante, non per i nazisti e basta. Perché quello che Martha Root ha mostrato non è che “la sicurezza faceva schifo” e stop, ma che un’infrastruttura di matching è, di fatto, una macchina che rende operativi dati sensibili: identità, preferenze, reti, geografia, appartenenze. E quando quella macchina si rompe, il potere che di solito esercita in silenzio diventa visibile.
Il punto è che non servono confessioni esplicite. Bastano i data proxy: segnali indiretti che, incrociati, ti profilano. Se mangio kosher “divento” ebreo nei modelli; se segno tutte le moschee “divento” musulmano; se posto “Black Lives Matter” finisco letto in modo diverso anche da sistemi assicurativi. È profilazione per deduzione: il dato sensibile non lo dichiari, lo lasci emergere dai contorni.
Per questo le policy non sono una cintura di sicurezza: cambiano, si reinterpretano, si aggirano. Il design invece è la decisione politica incorporata nell’architettura: cosa si collega, cosa si correla, cosa si esporta. Se una correlazione è tecnicamente possibile, prima o poi qualcuno la farà. È lo stesso motivo per cui, quando guardo infrastrutture pubbliche, mi interessa l’architettura politica oltre a quella tecnica: lo SPID nasceva con un’idea più decentralizzata proprio per evitare correlazioni tra Stato, portali e autenticazioni. Poi si è cambiata impostazione.
E la parte più inquietante è che non serve nemmeno un WhiteDate. Noi ci autoprofiliamo ogni giorno: i social sono un flusso continuo di segnali, e i metadati in foto e video sono boe, a volte coordinate vicino casa, con ricadute anche su chi vive con noi. Zuboff lo chiama capitalismo della sorveglianza: una raccolta diffusa in cui non sai quante aziende ti prendono, come ti incrociano e in quali liste finisci. Okstupid.lol è la versione “con la luce accesa”: lo stesso principio reso pubblico. Di norma le liste sono invisibili: non meno reali, meno consultabili.
okstupid.lol è spettacolare. Ma il suo spettacolo è una dimostrazione tecnica di quanto sia facile classificare e aggregare quando l’infrastruttura lo permette. E questa facilità, storicamente, non resta neutra. In Ruanda nel 1994 lo sterminio dei Tutsi fu facilitato anche da carte d’identità che classificavano le persone in base all’etnia. Negli anni Quaranta, dati del censimento vennero usati per localizzare e supportare misure di sorveglianza e internamento di persone di ascendenza giapponese dopo Pearl Harbor.
La tecnologia è un apparato amministrativo e informazionale piegato agli scopi di chi la possiede e del contesto politico. E il contesto politico cambia più velocemente delle policy. Per quanto apprezzi Martha Root, non la leggo come uno show: è un promemoria. Il potere dominante queste capacità le ha già, senza Power Ranger, senza exploit, con procedure, contratti standard e con quella cosa che mi piace tanto ma che in certi casi è un problema: l’interoperabilità.

Non è casualità, ma strategia. La stessa logica autoritaria e paternalista che da tempo accompagna la retorica della “riforma necessaria”: si decide in alto, poi si chiede al popolo di ratificare in fretta, e possibilmente distratto.
Dietro la parola d’ordine “modernizzare la giustizia” si nasconde un intento tutt’altro che neutro. Separare le carriere significa indebolire il pubblico ministero, togliergli indipendenza, e spingerlo verso una subordinazione più diretta al potere politico.
Una magistratura spaccata in due diventa più controllabile, più docile, più allineata ai desideri del governo di turno. È un vecchio sogno che torna ciclicamente: quello di poter “telefonare” ai giudici senza trovare dall’altra parte un muro di autonomia.
Niente campagne istituzionali di approfondimento, niente confronto pluralista. Solo qualche dichiarazione autoreferenziale dei leader di governo e una valanga di slogan.
Il risultato? Gli italiani rischiano di presentarsi alle urne senza capire davvero cosa stiano votando.Ed è proprio così che si mina una democrazia: non cancellandola in un colpo solo, ma svuotandola di pensiero critico e partecipazione consapevole. Non lasciamoci confondere dal lessico tecnico o dalla propaganda “modernizzatrice”.
Questo referendum non migliora la giustizia, ma la imbriglia, la amputa, la rende più vulnerabile al potere. Chi crede ancora in una Repubblica delle garanzie e non delle sudditanze, deve dirlo con forza e chiarezza. Il 22 e 23 marzo votiamo NO, per difendere il diritto di tutti a una giustizia davvero libera, non di governo.

If you need to drive a big screen for a project, it’s fair to say your first thought isn’t going to be to use the ATtiny85. With just 512 bytes of RAM and 8 kilobytes of flash memory, the 8-bit micro seems a little cramped to drive, say, a 10″ screen. Yet that’s exactly what [ToSStudio] is doing with TinyTFT_LT7683: 1024 x 600 pixels of TFT goodness, over I2C no less. With the right TFT controller, this little micro-controller can do magic. The name kind of gives away the secret: it won’t work on just any TFT display. It’s using properties of the LT7683 display driver, though if you don’t have one of those, the RA8875 is also compatible. Those drivers can take more than just a pixel stream– a good thing, since you’d be hard pressed to get that many pixels streaming from an ATtiny. These are character/graphic display drivers, which means you can get them to draw both characters and graphics on the screen if you speak the lingo.
It’s still not blazing fast; the documentation suggests “static or moderately dynamic UIs” as the suggested use case, and a clock is of the pre-programmed examples. From that, we can surmise that you can get 1 FPS or better with this code. You’re limited both by the simple micro-controller and the bandwidth of the I2C bus, but within those limits this seems like a very powerful technique.

Nel 2019 una rivolta popolare della durata di 4 mesi ha costretto il dittatore sudanese Al-Bashir, alla guida dello stato dal 1989 cedere il potere. L'insurrezione è continuata anche sotto il successivo governo di transizione civile-militare, e non è cessata nemmeno dopo il colpo di stato militare del 2021, che ha rimesso al potere i generali. Nonostante la brutale repressione, l'autorganizzazione nei quartieri è continuata, creando spiragli di libertà in cui potesse prendere forma un modo di vivere libero da stato, poteri religiosi ed etnici. E' in questo contesto che è nata e ha agito la federazione anarchica del Sudan, incitando alla rivolta, organizzando distribuzioni di cibo, farmaci e beni di prima necessità. Il moto rivoluzionario è continuato fino al 2023, quando lo scoppio della guerra civile tra i due generali al potere, l'ha soffocata nel sangue, diffondendo, come ogni guerra, stupri, massacri e distruzione. Da quasi 3 anni i signori della guerra, con il supporto finanziario e militare di vari attori esteri, cinicamente assetati di risorse, si combattono. Le stime, probabilmente al ribasso, parlano di 150 000 morti/e e 15 milioni di sfollati/e. I compagni e le compagne sudanesi tentano di sopravvivere e resistere in questo contesto brutale, senza prendere parte per uno o l'altro signore della guerra, costrettx a imbracciare le armi, anche a costo della vita. Welcome back to the Abstract! Here are the studies this week that lurked in the dark, pulsated with light, wagged a tail, and called it a night.
First, scientists have yet again spotted a bizarre object in space that has never been seen before—the universe just keeps serving them up. Then: news from the biggest star in the sky, a tale of eavesdropping dogs, and a jellyfish sleepover.
Astronomers have glimpsed a new type of cosmic object—a starless clump of dark matter that never quite worked up the oomph to become a galaxy. Known as Cloud-9, the entity is located about 14 million light years away and likely provides the first look at an ancient dark matter halo.
Dark matter, as you may have heard, is weird stuff that has never been directly detected or identified, but nonetheless accounts for almost all matter in the universe. In the early universe, clumps of dark matter formed halos that attracted gas, sparked star formation, and evolved into the first galaxies. But while all galaxies appear to have dark matter halos, not all dark matter halos turned into galaxies.
Scientists have long speculated that some halos may have never accumulated the right amount of mass to make a star-studded galaxy. For years, astronomers have searched for the gravitational signatures of these dark starless “failed galaxies,” which are known as Reionization-Limited H I Clouds (RELHICs).
Now, a team reports that the first clear RELHIC candidate ever discovered, providing support for the standard model of cosmology, also known as the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, which is the current working framework of the universe. Image: Anand, Gagandeep S. et al. “The abundance of halos far exceeds that of known galaxies, implying that not all halos are able to host luminous galaxies,” said researchers led by Gagandeep S. Anand of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. “This has been interpreted to mean that galaxies only form in halos that exceed a ‘critical’ mass.’”
“Our results make Cloud-9 the leading RELHIC candidate,” the team continued. “This provides strong support for a cornerstone prediction of the Lambda cold dark matter model, namely the existence of gas-filled starless dark matter halos on subgalactic mass scales, and constrains the present-day threshold halo mass for galaxy formation.”
Cloud-9 might one day accumulate enough mass to pass the threshold for star formation, allowing it to eventually graduate into a galaxy. But for now, it is a galaxy school flunkie.
WOH G64, one of the largest stars in the sky, is nearing its death. At about 2,000 times the size of the Sun, this supergiant would extend beyond Saturn if it were placed in our solar system.
Scientists have speculated that the recent dimming of the senescent star might signal a transition from a red supergiant to a yellow hypergiant, making it one step closer to supernova. But a new study reveals evidence that WOH G64 “is currently a red supergiant” and its changing light may be influenced by a companion star in orbit around it, making this a binary system. Calçada “For a long time, WOH G64 was known as the most extreme red supergiant outside our Galaxy,” said researchers led by Jacco Th. van Loon of Keele University. “However, in a matter of years it has faded” and “its pulsations have become suppressed.”
“We have presented evidence that the remarkable changes witnessed in the 21st-century in the optical brightness and spectrum of the most extreme known extragalactic red supergiant, WOH G64 may be due to binary interaction,” the team continued, noting that “we may be witnessing the birth of a…supernova progenitor.”
Fortunately, this time bomb is located 160,000 light years away, so we are well beyond the blast radius. Whenever WOH G64 does explode, the supernova could be bright enough to see with the naked eye from Earth, despite its location far outside the Milky Way.
It’s not your imagination: Your dog might actually be a really good listener. While it’s well-known that dogs respond to a variety of commands, researchers have now demonstrated that some pooches, known as Gifted Word Learners, can pick up new words just by passively overhearing their owners’ conversations.
Over a series of experiments, researchers gave dogs fun toys to play with, which their owners then named in conversations that were not directed at the dogs. The pets were then able to identify the toys by the labels at a rate significantly above what would be expected by chance, even though they had never been directly taught the words. Image: Don Harvey The findings suggest that some dogs may have sociocognitive skills parallel to young toddlers, and further confirms that a variety of animals can demonstrate various degrees of language comprehension. But the best part is the following detail about how the effervescent joy of dogs was accounted for in the experimental design.
“Because dogs are neophilic and often get excited by new toys, we gave them ample opportunities to interact with the toys without hearing their labels,” said researchers led by Shany Dror of University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
Science completed? Check. Dogs got loads of playtime? Check. Win-win.
We’ll close by yawning and going back to bed—a waterbed in this case, because this is a story about the sleep cycles of marine animals. To probe the broader evolutionary purpose of sleep, scientists monitored periods of slumber and wakefulness in the upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda and the anemone Nematostella vectensis.
The results revealed that these animals had remarkably similar sleeping habits to people. “Like humans, both species require a total of approximately 8 hours of sleep per day,” said researchers led by Raphaël Aguillon, who conducted the work at Bar-Ilan University, and is now at IBPC Paris-Sorbonne University.
“Notably, similar to findings in primates and flies, a midday nap was also observed in C. andromeda,” the team added.
Talk about sleeping with the fishes! The upshot of the study is that sleep has evolved across all animals with a nervous system to help repair damaged DNA, a benefit that is apparently worth the vulnerability of a resting state. But for our weekend purposes, my takeaway is that even jellyfish enjoy a midday nap, so go ahead and take that siesta.

Masterful Gambit: Musk Attempts to Monetize Grok's Wave of Sexual Abuse Imagery
Elon Musk, owner of the former social media network turned deepfake porn site X, is pushing people to pay for its nonconsensual intimate image generator Grok, meaning some of the app’s tens of millions of users are being hit with a paywall when they try to create nude images of random women doing sexually explicit things within seconds.
Some users trying to generate images on X using Grok receive a reply from the chatbot pushing them toward subscriptions: “Image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers. You can subscribe to unlock these features.” Users who fork over $8 a month can still reply to random images of random women and girls directly on X and tag in Grok with things like “make her wear clear tapes with tiny black censor bar covering her private part protecting her privacy and make her chest and hips grow largee[sic] as she squatting with leg open widely facing back, while head turn back looking to camera.” These images are still visible in everyone’s X feed, subscribers or not.
On the Grok app, a subscription to SuperGrok ($29.99/month) or SuperGrok Heavy ($299.99/month) allow users to generate images even faster. On Thursday, I received messages in the Grok app several times warning me that usage rates for the app were higher than normal and that I could pay to skip the wait.
As many legacy news outlets have already reported, Musk improved the subscription revenue funnel on his money-burning app following an outcry against these extremely popular uses of the app. “X Limits Grok Image Tool To Subscribers After Deepfake Outcry,” Deadline reported. “Grok turns off image generator for most users after outcry over sexualised AI imagery,” wrote the Guardian. “Elon Musk restricts Grok’s image tools following a wave of non-consensual deepfakes of women and children,” Fortune wrote.
Based on these headlines, you may be thinking, This is an uncharacteristic show of accountability and perhaps even self reflection from the billionaire technocrat white supremacist sympathizer who owns X.com, wow! But as with all things Musk does, this is a business move to monetize the long-established harassment factory he’s owned for three years and has yet to figure out how to make profitable. After years of attempting to push users toward a subscription model by placing meaningless status signifiers behind a paywall and making the site so toxic it bleeds users by the millions, he might have found a way to do it: by monetizing abuse at the source. Several other AI industry giants have already figured out that sexual content is where the money’s at, and Musk appears to be catching up. Putting the nonconsensual sexual images behind a paywall is also what every “nudify” and “undress” app and image generator platform on the market already does.
On Thursday, in the middle of Grok’s CSAM shitstorm, Bloomberg reported that xAI is looking at “a net loss of $1.46 billion for the September quarter, up from $1 billion in the first quarter,” according to internal documents obtained by Bloomberg. “In the first nine months of the year, it spent $7.8 billion in cash.” It’s too early to speculate, but making the people who are tagging @[url=https://bird.makeup/users/grok]Grok[/url] under the posts of women they don’t know and writing prompts like “make her bend over on all fours doggy style” multiple times a second pay for the privilege could be a play to get the company back in the black. playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… In addition to using Grok on X.com on desktop, It’s also still easy to generate images and videos in the Grok app without a subscription, which is still available on the Apple and Google app stores, despite blatantly breaking their rules against non-consensual material and pornography. The app and underground Telegram groups are where the really bad stuff is, anyway. Apple and Google have not replied to my request for comment about why the app is still available.
Signing up for X Premium or SuperGrok requires handing over your payment information, name associated with your credit card, and phone number. It also comes with the risk of having all of that hacked, stolen, and released to the dark web in the next big data breach of the platform.

Dagli Stati Uniti arriva un segnale di allarme che non può essere ignorato. L’Istituto Lemkin, ONG internazionale impegnata nella prevenzione dei genocidi, ha recentemente pubblicato uno studio che invita a leggere con estrema attenzione le politiche adottate dall’amministrazione Trump nei confronti delle persone trans*, non binarie e intersex. Secondo l’Istituto, e secondo autorevoli studiosi della materia, tra cui due ex presidenti dell’Associazione Internazionale degli Studiosi del Genocidio, tali politiche presentano caratteristiche riconducibili alle fasi iniziali dei processi di persecuzione sistematica che, in diversi contesti storici del Novecento, hanno preceduto crimini di massa e stermini di intere comunità.
La letteratura comparata sul genocidio mostra con chiarezza come questi processi non abbiano inizio con l’eliminazione fisica, ma con la costruzione istituzionale dell’alterità: la definizione di un gruppo come deviante, pericoloso o incompatibile con l’ordine sociale; la progressiva erosione dei suoi diritti; la normalizzazione della discriminazione attraverso atti amministrativi, legislativi e retorici. Dinamiche analoghe sono state osservate nei regimi totalitari europei del secolo scorso, così come in altri contesti segnati da politiche di esclusione radicale e disumanizzazione collettiva.
In questo quadro si collocano le politiche di persecuzione delle persone transgender, non binarie e intersex, che l’Istituto Lemkin individua come un preambolo a forme più estreme di violenza. Emblematica è la normativa che obbliga le persone trans* a utilizzare i servizi igienici in base al sesso assegnato alla nascita: una misura che non può essere considerata simbolica o marginale, ma che contribuisce a legittimare socialmente il controllo dei corpi e l’esposizione forzata nello spazio pubblico.
La dottoressa Elisa von Joeden-Forgey sottolinea come la combinazione di paura, propaganda e retoriche d’odio promosse o tollerate da apparati politico-statali costituisca il terreno su cui attecchiscono le forme più estreme di violenza. È uno schema ricorrente nella storia dei genocidi: prima l’isolamento simbolico, poi l’esclusione giuridica, infine la violenza aperta. I dati che ci arrivano confermano la gravità di questo contesto, mostrando un aumento delle difficoltà nel fare coming out e un incremento dei tassi di suicidio all’interno della comunità, segnali inequivocabili di una pressione sistemica che colpisce direttamente la vita delle persone.
Trump sta utilizzando i corpi delle persone migranti e di quelle trans*, non binarie e intersex come strumenti politici, contribuendo ad anestetizzare l’opinione pubblica rispetto alla violenza strutturale tipica dei regimi autoritari. È una strategia già vista nella storia, in cui la normalizzazione dell’abuso e dell’esclusione prepara il terreno a forme sempre più radicali di disumanizzazione.
Per questo, ricordando le parole del pastore Martin Niemöller nel celebre sermone “Prima vennero…”, è nostro compito non voltarci mai dall’altra parte davanti alla violenza e alla sua normalizzazione. Non saremo mai in un mondo libero finché esisterà anche una sola persona oppressa per il suo credo, per il suo sesso, per la sua identità di genere, per la sua nazionalità o per il colore della sua pelle.
