Going Native With Android’s Native Development Kit
Originally Android apps were only developed in Java, targeting the Dalvik Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and its associated environment. Compared to platforms like iOS with Objective-C, which is just C with Smalltalk uncomfortably crammed into it, an obvious problem here is that any JVM will significantly cripple performance, both due to a lack of direct hardware access and the garbage-collector that makes real-time applications such as games effectively impossible. There is also the issue that there is a lot more existing code written in languages like C and C++, with not a lot of enthusiasm among companies for porting existing codebases to Java, or the mostly Android-specific Kotlin.
The solution here was the Native Development Kit (NDK), which was introduced in 2009 and provides a sandboxed environment that native binaries can run in. The limitations here are mostly due to many standard APIs from a GNU/Linux or BSD environment not being present in Android/Linux, along with the use of the minimalistic Bionic C library and APIs that require a detour via the JVM rather than having it available via the NDK.
Despite these issues, using the NDK can still save a lot of time and allows for the sharing of mostly the same codebase between Android, desktop Linux, BSD and Windows.
NDK Versioning
When implying that use of the NDK can be worth it, I did not mean to suggest that it’s a smooth or painless experience. In fact, the overall experience is generally somewhat frustrating and you’ll run into countless Android-specific issues that cannot be debugged easily or at all with standard development tools like GDB, Valgrind, etc. Compared to something like Linux development, or the pre-Swift world of iOS development where C and C++ are directly supported, it’s quite the departure.
Installing the NDK fortunately doesn’t require that you have the SDK installed, with a dedicated download page. You can also download the command-line tools in order to get the SDK manager. Whether using the CLI tool or the full-fat SDK manager in the IDE, you get to choose from a whole range of NDK versions, which raises the question of why there’s not just a single NDK version.
The answer here is that although generally you can just pick the latest (stable) version and be fine, each update also updates the included toolchain and Android sysroot, which creates the possibility of issues with an existing codebase. You may have to experiment until you find a version that works for your particular codebase if you end up having build issues, so be sure to mark the version that last worked well. Fortunately you can have multiple NDK versions installed side by side without too much fuss.
Simply set the NDK_HOME
variable in your respective OS or environment to the NDK folder of your choice and you should be set.
Doing Some Porting
Since Android features a JVM, it’s possible to create the typical native modules for a JVM application using a Java Native Interface (JNI) wrapper to do a small part natively, it’s more interesting to do things the other way around. This is also typically what happens when you take an existing desktop application and port it, with my NymphCast Server (NCS) project as a good example. This is an SDL- and FFmpeg-based application that’s fairly typical for a desktop application.
Unlike the GUI and Qt-based NymphCast Player which was briefly covered in a previous article, NCS doesn’t feature a GUI as such, but uses SDL2 to create a hardware-accelerated window in which content is rendered, which can be an OpenGL-based UI, video playback or a screensaver. This makes SDL2 the first dependency that we have to tackle as we set up the new project.
Of course, first we need to create the Android project folder with its specific layout and files. This is something that has been made increasingly more convoluted by Google, with most recently your options reduced to either use the Android Studio IDE or to assemble it by hand, with the latter option not much fun. Using an IDE for this probably saves you a lot of headaches, even if it requires breaking the ‘no IDE’ rule. Definitely blame Google for this one.
Next is tackling the SDL2 dependency, with the SDL developers fortunately providing direct support for Android. Simply get the current release ZIP file, tarball or whatever your preferred flavor is of SDL2 and put the extracted files into a new folder called SDL2
inside the project’s JNI folder, creating the full path of app/jni/SDL2
. Inside this folder we should now at least have the SDL2 include
and src
folders, along with the Android.mk
file in the root. This latter file is key to actually building SDL2 during the build process, as we’ll see in a moment.
We first need to take care of the Java connection in SDL2, as the Java files we find in the extracted SDL2 release under android-project/app/src/main/java/org/libsdl\app
are the glue between the Android JVM world and the native environment. Copy these files into the newly created folder at src/server/android/app/src/main/java/org/libsdl/app
.
Before we call the SDL2 dependency done, there’s one last step: creating a custom Java class derived from SDLActivity
, which implements the getLibraries()
function. This returns an array of strings with the names of the shared libraries that should be loaded, which for NCS are SDL2
and nymphcastserver
, which will load their respective .so
files.
Prior to moving on, let’s address the elephant in the room of why we cannot simply use shared libraries from Linux or a project like Termux. There’s no super-complicated reason for this, as it’s mostly about Android’s native environment not supporting versioned shared libraries. This means that a file like widget.so.1.2
will not be found while widget.so
without encoded versioning would be, thus severely limiting which libraries we can use in a drop-in fashion.
While there has been talk of an NDK package manager over the years, Google doesn’t seem interested in this, and community efforts seem tepid at most outside of Termux, so this is the reality we have to live with.
Sysroot Things
It’d take at least a couple of articles to fully cover the whole experience of setting up the NCS Android port, but a Cliff’s Notes version can be found in the ‘build steps’ notes which I wrote down primarily for myself and the volunteers on the project as a reference. Especially of note is how many of the dependencies are handled, with static libraries and headers generally added to the sysroot of the target NDK so that they can be used across projects.
For example, NCS relies on the PoCo (portable component) libraries – for which I had to create the Poco-build project to build it for modern Android – with the resulting static libraries being copied into the sysroot. This sysroot and its location for libraries is found for example on Windows under:

The folder layout of the NDK is incredibly labyrinthine, but if you start under the toolchains/llvm/prebuilt
folder it should be fairly evident where to place things. Headers are copied as is typical once in the usr/include
folder.
As can be seen in the NCS build notes, we get some static libraries from the Termux project, via its packages server. This includes FreeImage, NGHTTP2 and the header-only RapidJSON, which were the only unversioned dependencies that I could find for NCS from this source. The other dependencies are compiled into a library by placing the source with Makefile in their own folders under app/jni
.
Finally, the reason for picking only static libraries for copying into the sysroot is mostly about convenience, as this way the library is merged into the final shared library that gets spit out by the build system and we don’t need to additionally include these .so
files in the app/src/main/jniLibs/<arch>
for copying into the APK.
Building A Build System
Although Google has been pushing CMake on Android NDK developers, ndk-build is the more versatile and powerful choice, with projects like SDL offering the requisite Android.mk
file. To trigger the build of our project from the Gradle wrapper, we need to specify the external native build in app/build.gradle
as follows:

This references a Makefile that just checks all subfolders for a Makefile to run, thus triggering the build of each Android.mk
file of the dependencies, as well as of NCS itself. Since I didn’t want to copy the entire NCS source code into this folder, the Android.mk
file is simply an adapted version of the regular NCS Makefile with only the elements that ndk-build
needs included.
We can now build a debug APK from the CLI with ./gradlew assembleDebug
or equivalent command, before waddling off to have a snack and a relaxing walk to hopefully return to a completed build:Finished NymphCast Server build for Android on an Intel N100-based system.
Further Steps
Although the above is a pretty rough overview of the entire NDK porting process, it should hopefully provide a few useful pointers if you are considering either porting an existing C or C++ codebase to Android, or to write one from scratch. There are a lot more gotchas that are not covered in this article, but feel free to sound off in the comment section on what else might be useful to cover.
Another topic that’s not covered yet here is that of debugging and profiling. Although you can set up a debugging session – which I prefer to do via an IDE out of sheer convenience – when it comes to profiling and testing for memory and multi-threading issues, you will run into a bit of a brick wall. Although Valgrind kinda-sorta worked on Android in the distant past, you’re mostly stuck using the LLVM-based Address Sanitizer (ASan) or the newer HWASan to get you sorta what the Memcheck tool in Valgrind provides.
Unlike the Valgrind tools which require zero code modification, you need to specially compile your code with ASan support, add a special wrapper to the APK and a couple of further modifications to the project. Although I have done this for the NCS project, it was a nightmare, and didn’t really net me very useful results. It’s therefore really recommended to avoid ASan and just debug the code on Linux with Valgrind.
Currently NCS is nearly as stable as on desktop OSes, meaning that instead of it being basically bombproof it will occasionally flunk out, with an AAudio-related error on some test devices for so far completely opaque reasons. This, too, is is illustrative of the utter joy that it is to port applications to Android. As long as you can temper your expectations and have some guides to follow it’s not too terrible, but the NDK really rubs in how much Android is not ‘just another Linux distro’.
Shiny tools, shallow checks: how the AI hype opens the door to malicious MCP servers
Introduction
In this article, we explore how the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the new “plug-in bus” for AI assistants — can be weaponized as a supply chain foothold. We start with a primer on MCP, map out protocol-level and supply chain attack paths, then walk through a hands-on proof of concept: a seemingly legitimate MCP server that harvests sensitive data every time a developer runs a tool. We break down the source code to reveal the server’s true intent and provide a set of mitigations for defenders to spot and stop similar threats.
What is MCP
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) was introduced by AI research company Anthropic as an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external data sources and tools. Basically, MCP lets AI models talk to different tools, services, and data using natural language instead of each tool requiring a custom integration.
MCP follows a client–server architecture with three main components:
- MCP clients. An MCP client integrated with an AI assistant or app (like Claude or Windsurf) maintains a connection to an MCP server allowing such apps to route the requests for a certain tool to the corresponding tool’s MCP server.
- MCP hosts. These are the LLM applications themselves (like Claude Desktop or Cursor) that initiate the connections.
- MCP servers. This is what a certain application or service exposes to act as a smart adapter. MCP servers take natural language from AI and translate it into commands that run the equivalent tool or action.

MCP as an attack vector
Although MCP’s goal is to streamline AI integration by using one protocol to reach any tool, this adds to the scale of its potential for abuse, with two methods attracting the most attention from attackers.
Protocol-level abuse
There are multiple attack vectors threat actors exploit, some of which have been described by other researchers.
- MCP naming confusion (name spoofing and tool discovery)
An attacker could register a malicious MCP server with a name almost identical to a legitimate one. When an AI assistant performs name-based discovery, it resolves to the rogue server and hands over tokens or sensitive queries. - MCP tool poisoning
Attackers hide extra instructions inside the tool description or prompt examples. For instance, the user sees “add numbers”, while the AI also reads the sensitive data command “cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa” — it prints the victim’s private SSH key. The model performs the request, leaking data without any exploit code. - MCP shadowing
In multi-server environments, a malicious MCP server might alter the definition of an already-loaded tool on the fly. The new definition shadows the original but might also include malicious redirecting instructions, so subsequent calls are silently routed through the attacker’s logic. - MCP rug pull scenarios
A rug pull, or an exit scam, is a type of fraudulent scheme, where, after building trust for what seems to be a legitimate product or service, the attackers abruptly disappear or stop providing said service. As for MCPs, one example of a rug pull attack might be when a server is deployed as a seemingly legitimate and helpful tool that tricks users into interacting with it. Once trust and auto-update pipelines are established, the attacker maintaining the project swaps in a backdoored version that AI assistants will upgrade to, automatically. - Implementation bugs (GitHub MCP, Asana, etc.)
Unpatched vulnerabilities pose another threat. For instance, researchers showed how a crafted GitHub issue could trick the official GitHub MCP integration into leaking data from private repos.
What makes the techniques above particularly dangerous is that all of them exploit default trust in tool metadata and naming and do not require complex malware chains to gain access to victims’ infrastructure.
Supply chain abuse
Supply chain attacks remain one of the most relevant ongoing threats, and we see MCP weaponized following this trend with malicious code shipped disguised as a legitimately helpful MCP server.
We have described numerous cases of supply chain attacks, including malicious packages in the PyPI repository and backdoored IDE extensions. MCP servers were found to be exploited similarly, although there might be slightly different reasons for that. Naturally, developers race to integrate AI tools into their workflows, while prioritizing speed over code review. Malicious MCP servers arrive via familiar channels, like PyPI, Docker Hub, and GitHub Releases, so the installation doesn’t raise suspicions. But with the current AI hype, a new vector is on the rise: installing MCP servers from random untrusted sources with far less inspection. Users post their customs MCPs on Reddit, and because they are advertised as a one-size-fits-all solution, these servers gain instant popularity.
An example of a kill chain including a malicious server would follow the stages below:
- Packaging: the attacker publishes a slick-looking tool (with an attractive name like “ProductivityBoost AI”) to PyPI or another repository.
- Social engineering: the README file tricks users by describing attractive features.
- Installation: a developer runs
pip install
, then registers the MCP server inside Cursor or Claude Desktop (or any other client). - Execution: the first call triggers hidden reconnaissance; credential files and environment variables are cached.
- Exfiltration: the data is sent to the attacker’s API via a POST request.
- Camouflage: the tool’s output looks convincing and might even provide the advertised functionality.
PoC for a malicious MCP server
In this section, we dive into a proof of concept posing as a seemingly legitimate MCP server. We at Kaspersky GERT created it to demonstrate how supply chain attacks can unfold through MCP and to showcase the potential harm that might come from running such tools without proper auditing. We performed a controlled lab test simulating a developer workstation with a malicious MCP server installed.
Server installation
To conduct the test, we created an MCP server with helpful productivity features as the bait. The tool advertised useful features for development: project analysis, configuration security checks, and environment tuning, and was provided as a PyPI package.
For the purpose of this study, our further actions would simulate a regular user’s workflow as if we were unaware of the server’s actual intent.
To install the package, we used the following commands:

Now that the package was installed and running, we configured an AI client (Cursor in this example) to point at the MCP server.

Now we have legitimate-looking MCP tools loaded in our client.
Below is a sample of the output we can see when using these tools — all as advertised.
But after using said tools for some time, we received a security alert: a network sensor had flagged an HTTP POST to an odd endpoint that resembled a GitHub API domain. It was high time we took a closer look.
Host analysis
We began our investigation on the test workstation to determine exactly what was happening under the hood.
Using Wireshark, we spotted multiple POST requests to a suspicious endpoint masquerading as the GitHub API.
Below is one such request — note the Base64-encoded payload and the GitHub headers.

This is clear evidence that sensitive data was being leaked from the machine.
Armed with the server’s PID (34144), we loaded Procmon and observed extensive file enumeration activity by the MCP process.

Next, we pulled the package source code to examine it. The directory tree looked innocuous at first glance.

The server implements three convincing developer productivity tools:

Each tool appears legitimate but triggers the same underlying malicious data collection engine under the guise of logging metrics and reporting.

Core malicious engine
The project_metrics.py
file is the core of the weaponized functionality. When launched, it tries to collect sensitive data from the development environment and from the user machine itself.
The malicious engine systematically uses pattern matching to locate sensitive files. It sweeps both the project tree and key system folders in search of target categories:
- environment files (.env, .env.local, .env.production)
- SSH keys (~/.ssh/id_rsa, ~/.ssh/id_ed25519)
- cloud configurations (~/.aws/credentials, ~/.gcp/credentials.json)
- API tokens and certificates (.pem, .key, .crtfiles)
- database connection strings and configuration files
- Windows-specific targets (%APPDATA% credential stores)
- browser passwords and credit card data
- cryptocurrency wallet files

......Each hit is classified by type, its first 100 KB is captured, and the result is cached for eight hours to keep scans fast and quiet. The target file metadata (path, size, and last modified time) is logged, while sensitive bytes are redacted before any UI display: that way, the victim only sees the legitimate output in Cursor. Those redacted indexes are sent as input to the analyzer, config-health checker, and environment optimizer, letting them provide seemingly useful results while the server silently hoards the real secrets.

The tools try to exfiltrate data by disguising compromised traffic as something that looks legitimate so it can hide in plain sight.

Takeaways and mitigations
Our experiment demonstrated a simple truth: installing an MCP server basically gives it permission to run code on a user machine with the user’s privileges. Unless it is sandboxed, third-party code can read the same files the user has access to and make outbound network calls — just like any other program. In order for defenders, developers, and the broader ecosystem to keep that risk in check, we recommend adhering to the following rules:
- Check before you install.
Use an approval workflow: submit every new server to a process where it’s scanned, reviewed, and approved before production use. Maintain a whitelist of approved servers so anything new stands out immediately. - Lock it down.
Run servers inside containers or VMs with access only to the folders they need. Separate networks so a dev machine can’t reach production or other high-value systems. - Watch for odd behavior.
Log every prompt and response. Hidden instructions or unexpected tool calls will show up in the transcript. Monitor for anomalies. Keep an eye out for suspicious prompts, unexpected SQL commands, or unusual data flows — like outbound traffic triggered by agents outside standard workflows. - Plan for trouble.
Keep a one-click kill switch that blocks or uninstalls a rogue server across the fleet. Collect centralized logs so you can understand what happened later. Continuous monitoring and detection are crucial for better security posture, even if you have the best security in place.
Flashlight Repair Brings Entire Workshop to Bear
The modern hacker and maker has an incredible array of tools at their disposal — even a modestly appointed workbench these days would have seemed like science-fiction a couple decades ago. Desktop 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills, lathes, the list goes on and on. But what good is all that fancy gear if you don’t put it to work once and awhile?
If we had to guess, we’d say dust never gets a chance to accumulate on any of the tools in [Ed Nisley]’s workshop. According to his blog, the prolific hacker is either building or repairing something on a nearly daily basis. All of his posts are worth reading, but the multifaceted rebuilding of a Anker LC-40 flashlight from a couple months back recently caught our eye.
The problem was simple enough: the button on the back of the light went from working intermittently to failing completely. [Ed] figured there must be a drop in replacement out there, but couldn’t seem to find one in his online searches. So he took to the parts bin and found a surface-mount button that was nearly the right size. At the time, it seemed like all he had to do was print out a new flexible cover for the button out of TPU, but getting the material to cooperate took him down an unexpected rabbit hole of settings and temperatures.
With the cover finally printed, there was a new problem. It seemed that the retaining ring that held in the button PCB was damaged during disassembly, so [Ed] ended up having to design and print a new one. Unfortunately, the 0.75 mm pitch threads on the retaining ring were just a bit too small to reasonably do with an FDM printer, so he left the sides solid and took the print over to the lathe to finish it off.
Of course, the tiny printed ring was too small and fragile to put into the chuck of the lathe, so [Ed] had to design and print a fixture to hold it. Oh, and since the lathe was only designed to cut threads in inches, he had to make a new gear to convert it over to millimeters. But at least that was a project he completed previously.
With the fine threads cut into the printed retaining ring ready to hold in the replacement button and its printed cover, you might think the flashlight was about to be fixed. But alas, it was not to be. It seems the original button had a physical stabilizer on it to keep it from wobbling around, which wouldn’t fit now that the button had been changed. [Ed] could have printed a new part here as well, but to keep things interesting, he turned to the laser cutter and produced a replacement from a bit of scrap acrylic.
In the end, the flashlight was back in fighting form, and the story would seem to be at an end. Except for the fact that [Ed] eventually did find the proper replacement button online. So a few days later he ended up taking the flashlight apart, tossing the custom parts he made, and reassembling it with the originals.
Some might look at this whole process and see a waste of time, but we prefer to look at it as a training exercise. After all, the experienced gained is more valuable than keeping a single flashlight out of the dump. That said, should the flashlight ever take a dive in the future, we’re confident [Ed] will know how to fix it. Even better, now we do as well.
USB-C PD Decoded: A DIY Meter and Logger for Power Insights
As USB-C PD becomes more and more common, it’s useful to have a tool that lets you understand exactly what it’s doing—no longer is it limited to just 5 V. This DIY USB-C PD tool, sent in by [ludwin], unlocks the ability to monitor voltage and current, either on a small screen built into the device or using Wi-Fi.
This design comes in two flavors: with and without screen. The OLED version is based on an STM32, and the small screen shows you the voltage, current, and wattage flowing through the device. The Wi-Fi PD logger version uses an ESP-01s to host a small website that shows you those same values, but with the additional feature of being able to log that data over time and export a CSV file with all the collected data, which can be useful when characterizing the power draw of your project over time.
Both versions use the classic INA219 in conjunction with a 50 mΩ shunt resistor, allowing for readings in the 1 mA range. The enclosure is 3D-printed, and the files for it, as well as all the electronics and firmware, are available over on the GitHub page. Thursday: Oppose Cambridge Police Surveillance!
This Thursday, the Cambridge Pole & Conduit Commission will consider Flock’s requests to put up 15 to 20 surveillance cameras with Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technologies around Cambridge. The Cambridge City Council, in a 6-3 vote on Feb. 3rd, approved Cambridge PD’s request to install these cameras. It was supposed to roll out to Central Square only, but it looks like Cambridge PD and Flock have asked to put up a camera at the corner of Rindge and Alewife Brook Parkway facing eastward. That is pretty far from Central Square.
Anyone living within 150 feet of the camera location should have been mailed letters from Flock telling them that the can attend the Pole & Conduit Commission meeting this Thursday at 9am and comment on Flock’s request. The Pole & Conduit Commission hasn’t posted its agenda or the requests it will consider on Thursday. If you got a letter or found out that you are near where Flock wants to install one of these cameras, please attend the meeting to speak against it and notify your neighbors.
The Cambridge Day, who recently published a story on us, reports that City Councilors Patty Nolan, Sumbul Siddiqui and Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler have called for reconsidering introducing more cameras to Cambridge. These cameras are paid for by the federal Urban Area Security Initiative grant program and the data they collect will be shared with the Boston Regional Information Center (BRIC) and from there to ICE, CBP and other agencies that are part of Trump’s new secret police already active in the Boston area.
We urge you to attend this meeting at 9am on Thursday and speak against the camera nearest you, if you received a letter or know that the camera will be within 150 feet of your residence. You can register in advance and the earlier you register, the earlier you will be able to speak. Issues you can bring up:
- A Texas sheriff recently searched ALPR data to identify the location of a Texas woman who sought an out-of-state abortion. We will see more efforts like this as conservative state legislatures criminalize abortion and attempt to force their views on us;
- The Cambridge Police Department has stated in a public hearing that they use license plate readers to monitor traffic in the vicinity of protests. People exercising their 1st Amendment right to peaceful protest should not fear that they will end up in a local, commonwealth or federal database because their car was near a protest;
- Last year, Boston shared its ALPR data 37 times with federal agencies and state police in other states. The Flock ALPR database is available nationaly and Flock has a pilot contract with Customs and Border Patrol to send them ALPR data directly;
- In the past, ALPR companies have not done a good job keeping their data secure. In Boston, there was a leak of ALPR data on 68,924 scans of 45,020 unique vehicles which caused the Boston Police Department to suspend ALPR data collection in 2013.

La Rivoluzione Russa del 1917 portò a una nuova concezione della guerra da parte russa, concezione che si sviluppò ulteriormente durante i due conflitti mondiali. I russi iniziarono ad adottare tattiche che prevedevano un uso massiccio, indiscriminato e sproporzionato di uomini, aerei e mezzi corazzati. A causa di queste tattiche, l'URSS subì 24 milioni di morti durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, un numero catastrofico.

Al contrario, la dottrina militare della NATO enfatizza la cooperazione collettiva e una difesa elastica che implica anche la perdita di terreno e la rinuncia a obiettivi tattici pur di preservare la vita dei propri soldati. Crimini forestali: Deforestazione illegale e abbattimento di alberi. Il ruolo dei Carabinieri Forestali italiani
In un suo recente documento che analizza i crimini che impattano sull'ambiente, UNODC (l'Agenzia delle Nazioni Unite contro la criminalità) sottolinea come quella forestale porta a significativi danni ambientali, riducendo la biodiversità e compromettendo la salute degli ecosistemi. Inoltre, minaccia i mezzi di sussistenza delle comunità locali che dipendono dalle foreste per il cibo e il reddito. Le pratiche illegali, come il disboscamento e la corruzione, possono anche portare a violazioni dei diritti umani, come il lavoro minorile e il lavoro forzato. Quando la criminalità forestale si sovrappone ad altre attività illegali, come il traffico di droga o il commercio di esseri umani, le conseguenze sono amplificate, causando danni significativi alle comunità e all'ambiente. Questa convergenza crea reti criminali complesse che facilitano la corruzione e l'inefficienza nelle forze dell'ordine, rendendo più difficile il monitoraggio e l'applicazione delle leggi.
L'obiettivo principale degli sforzi per fermare la perdita di foreste e la degradazione del suolo entro il 2030 è quello di "fermare e invertire" tali fenomeni, promuovendo al contempo uno sviluppo sostenibile e una trasformazione rurale inclusiva. Questo è cruciale per contribuire alla mitigazione dei cambiamenti climatici, poiché le foreste assorbono una quantità significativa di CO2. Inoltre, si mira a proteggere la biodiversità e garantire i mezzi di sussistenza delle comunità locali che dipendono dalle foreste.
Per combattere la criminalità forestale, sono necessari meccanismi di monitoraggio che includano tecnologie avanzate per la tracciabilità e la verifica della legalità del legname. È fondamentale migliorare la cooperazione internazionale e stabilire accordi bilaterali tra paesi produttori e consumatori per prevenire l'importazione di legname illegalmente estratto. Inoltre, l'applicazione delle leggi deve essere rafforzata attraverso l'istituzione di unità specializzate e l'integrazione di misure anti-corruzione nelle strategie nazionali. È necessario implementare meccanismi di monitoraggio avanzati, inclusi tecnologie geospaziali e cooperazione internazionale, per tracciare e verificare la legalità delle fonti di legname. Le normative devono essere costantemente valutate e rafforzate per chiudere le lacune legislative e adattarsi a nuove strategie illegali. Inoltre, è fondamentale coinvolgere le autorità di regolamentazione e le ONG nella supervisione delle attività forestali e nella promozione della trasparenza nella catena di approvvigionamento.
Le normative esistenti possono essere utilizzate per affrontare i crimini forestali attraverso l'applicazione di sanzioni penali e amministrative per le violazioni legate alla gestione forestale. È possibile migliorare la trasparenza e la responsabilità nella catena di approvvigionamento, imponendo requisiti di due diligence per garantire che i prodotti siano privi di deforestazione illegale. Inoltre, le leggi internazionali, come la Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite contro la Criminalità Organizzata Transnazionale, possono essere sfruttate per affrontare i crimini forestali a livello globale, integrando le politiche nazionali con strategie di enforcement più efficaci. La cooperazione internazionale di polizia può facilitare lo scambio di informazioni e intelligence tra le forze dell'ordine di diversi paesi per identificare e smantellare reti criminali coinvolte nella criminalità forestale. Può anche supportare operazioni congiunte per il monitoraggio e l'applicazione delle leggi, migliorando l'efficacia delle indagini su attività illegali transnazionali. Inoltre, la cooperazione può promuovere la formazione e lo sviluppo delle capacità delle forze di polizia locali per affrontare in modo più efficace i crimini ambientali.
Il ruolo dei Carabinieri Forestali italiani
In questo contesto i Carabinieri Forestali italiani rappresentano una componente peculiare nel panorama delle forze di polizia europee e mondiali. Essi uniscono le funzioni tradizionali di tutela ambientale e forestale con quelle di polizia giudiziaria e di pubblica sicurezza, cosa non comune in altri Paesi (dove le polizie forestali non hanno poteri così estesi). Le loro competenze si estendono dalla tutela delle foreste, biodiversità, fauna e flora protette, al contrasto ai reati ambientali (inquinamento, traffico illecito di rifiuti, disboscamento illegale, commercio illegale di specie protette), gestione e protezione di aree naturali protette, parchi nazionali e siti UNESCO e supporto in emergenze ambientali (incendi boschivi, disastri naturali, dissesti idrogeologici).
Essi sono quindi considerati un modello europeo di polizia ambientale.
Contribuiscono a programmi di capacity building e formazione di altre forze di polizia o ranger in Paesi in via di sviluppo (es. lotta al bracconaggio in Africa, gestione forestale sostenibile nei Balcani e in Asia) e sono punto di riferimento in reti come INTERPOL Environmental Crime Working Group ed EUROPOL per reati legati a rifiuti e traffici di specie protette.
A differenza di altri corpi simili, non operano solo come law enforcement, ma anche come scienziati, tecnici forestali e investigatori, poiché hanno reparti specializzati in analisi ambientali, genetica forestale, balistica e tossicologia ambientale, che forniscono supporto tecnico anche a livello internazionale.
La loro presenza nelle missioni internazionali porta quindi con sé un forte valore simbolico: protezione del territorio e della natura come parte integrante della sicurezza globale. Inoltre, rappresentano uno strumento di diplomazia ambientale, perché uniscono sicurezza, sostenibilità e cooperazione multilaterale.
In sintesi, i Carabinieri Forestali si distinguono perché sono l’unica forza di polizia a carattere militare con specializzazione ambientale a livello mondiale, capace di operare sia sul fronte della sicurezza sia su quello della protezione della natura, e per questo sono particolarmente preziosi nella cooperazione internazionale.

L’incursione di una ventina di droni russi sulla Polonia suscita vari interrogativi e discussioni. È tuttora avvolta dall’incertezza. Tutte le parti in campo nel confronto strategico fra Nato e Russia danno interpretazioni che “tirano l’acqua al loro mulino”.

Una cosa che mi è diventata davvero chiara da ieri è che viviamo in almeno due realtà diverse. Parlando con un'amica che conosceva Charlie solo come oratore motivazionale cristiano, perché era l'unica cosa che le capitava tra le mani. Mi ha mostrato video che non avevo mai visto prima, in cui diceva cose perfettamente ragionevoli e incoraggianti.
Le ho mostrato video che lei non aveva mai visto prima sul suo razzismo, la sua misoginia, la sua omofobia, la sua incitamento alla violenza contro specifici gruppi di persone. Era inorridita dalle sue osservazioni sull'aggressore del marito di Pelosi, rilasciato su cauzione e celebrato per il suo atto violento. Era inorridita da diverse cose che aveva detto, ma non le aveva mai viste o sentite prima, così come io non avevo mai visto o sentito i video generici in cui si mostrava come un uomo e un padre perfettamente amorevole.
Nessuno di noi due aveva un'idea precisa di quest'uomo. Le ho detto che era un noto suprematista bianco e lei ha pensato che stessi scherzando. Ha detto che avrebbe fatto un discorso su come trovare il proprio scopo e fare del bene nel mondo e io ho pensato che stesse scherzando.
Ho capito perché questa amica stava piangendo la perdita di una persona che considerava una brava persona. La mia amica, che Dio la benedica, ha capito perché provo quello che provo per lui. Ci siamo capiti meglio. Nonostante una macchina internet multimiliardaria specificamente concentrata a tenerci separati. Perché ci siamo parlati con il desiderio di ascoltare e imparare, piuttosto che con il desiderio di far cambiare idea a qualcun altro o di avere "ragione".
Nessuna di quelle cose motivazionali che ha detto cambia la mia opinione su di lui perché non cancellano la negatività, i sottili appelli alla violenza, lo sminuire e denigrare altre razze, religioni, generi, ecc. I suoi commenti negativi e accusatori sui senzatetto, i poveri e le vittime di violenza domestica. I suoi commenti sul radunare persone che non la pensavano come lui e metterle in campi dove il loro comportamento poteva essere corretto. Quella volta ha detto che l'empatia era una parola inventata in cui non credeva. Quell'altra volta ha detto che il Civil Rights Act era un errore. La volta in cui ha detto che la maggior parte delle persone ha paura quando sale su un aereo e vede che c'è un pilota nero. La sua retorica anti-vaccinazione e la sua attiva campagna contro il permesso di indossare mascherine per la propria salute. Il suo aperto sostegno al fascismo e alla supremazia bianca. Per me, tutti questi sono sentimenti totalmente non cristiani. Sono innegabili e anche uno solo di essi sarebbe un ostacolo per me. Tutti insieme sono l'immagine di un uomo che era polarizzante, faceva infuriare molte persone e giustamente, ma nonostante tutto non augurerei mai a lui o soprattutto ai suoi figli la fine che ha fatto.
Oh, e la mia amica non ne aveva mai sentito parlare, e Dio mi aiuti, non so come abbia fatto a sfuggire alla notizia, ma non aveva mai sentito parlare dei parlamentari del Minnesota che sono stati colpiti a giugno. Il marito, la moglie e il cane che sono stati uccisi, uno dopo essersi gettato sul figlio per proteggerlo. L'altra coppia che in qualche modo è sopravvissuta. Attacchi motivati politicamente, proprio perché erano democratici. Ha saputo di quelle sparatorie avvenute mesi fa perché le ho mostrato i commenti di Charlie Kirk al riguardo. Il complotto per il rapimento di una governatrice democratica del Midwest. Il tentato omicidio del governatore democratico della Pennsylvania. Tutte cose di cui Charlie aveva molto da dire, pur sostenendo il Secondo Emendamento e attaccando il Partito Democratico. Non ne sapeva nulla perché viviamo tutti in due mondi diversi e nessuno di noi conosce tutta la storia."
