When [Reit Tech] needed something to do with an old Nintendo Wii, he turned to Google. When the AI overview told him it could not be used as a server, he had his mission: prove that clanker wrong. It already runs Doom, so what else is there to do?
Of course should not that hard: Linux has been available on the Wii for years now. In fact there are several; he settles on “Arch, btw”, after trying Debian, Ubuntu, and even NetBSD. “Of course it runs NetBSD”– but NetBSD didn’t work with his USB network adapter, which is sadly as predictable as the hardware running NetBSD.
OK, it’s not vanilla Arch; it’s the Wii-Linux Continuation Project, based on ArchPOWER fork that compiles Arch for PPC. As the young YouTuber was surprised to discover, despite not being a PC or particularly powerful, the Wii has a PowerPC CPU. (He might be younger than the console, so we’ll give him a pass.) Wii-Linux couldn’t run the USB adapter either (appropriate apologies were offered to NetBSD), but it turns out the internal Ethernet adapter was available all along.
As a file server, python-based Copyparty worked flawlessly, but the rust-based Minecraft server he picked was not particularly usable. A little optimization would fix that, since you can serve Minecraft from an ESP32 and the Wii absolutely has more horsepower than that. Doubtless he could have loaded a web-server, and proved Google’s AI summary wrong, but the iPad-induced ADHD we all suffer from these days kicks in, so he settled for posting a screenshot of someone else’s blog, hosted on a Wii from NetBSD. So the LLM was wrong from the get-go, but the tour of “what home-brew loaded OSes still work in 2025” was certainly educational.
We could hunt that blog Wii-based blog down for you, but we’d be reluctant to link to it anyway: while the AI summary is wrong, and you can use the Wii as a server, that doesn’t mean it makes a good one. We’d don’t feel the need to inadvertently DDOS some poor unsuspecting shmuck’s Nintendo, so we’ll let you try and find it yourself.
Just be warned that all of this Wii hacking may not rest on the best of foundations.

Lavoro e intelligenza artificiale: stipendi in aumento per chi usa l’IA?
In questo periodo il dibattito sull’intelligenza artificiale applicata al mondo del lavoro è sempre più intenso, segno evidente di come la tecnologia digitale stia trasformando radicalmente modalità, competenze e dinamiche occupazionali. Le ripercussioni iniziano già a manifestarsi in diversi settori: come abbiamo recentemente riportato, la figura dello sviluppatore è stata tra le prime a risentirne, con un calo del 71% nelle richieste di personale specializzato.
Un recente sondaggio condotto dalla piattaforma di reclutamento online rivela che la maggior parte dei dipendenti considera giustificato un aumento salariale per chi utilizza attivamente strumenti di intelligenza artificiale nel proprio lavoro.
Il 15% degli intervistati ritiene che l’impiego dell’IA debba garantire un incremento retributivo a prescindere dai risultati. Una quota più consistente, pari al 46%, sostiene invece che l’aumento sia appropriato solo se l’uso dell’IA porta a un miglioramento delle performance.
Al contrario, il 34% non vede alcuna connessione tra retribuzione e interazione con le reti neurali, mentre il 5% pensa addirittura che gli stipendi di questi professionisti dovrebbero diminuire, poiché parte delle mansioni verrebbe comunque svolta dall’IA.
Le differenze generazionali emergono con chiarezza. I lavoratori sotto i 24 anni tendono a ritenere le competenze in ambito IA un valore aggiunto da premiare economicamente: il 16% si dichiara favorevole a un riconoscimento automatico, mentre il 47% lo considera auspicabile in parte. Tra gli over 55, invece, prevale l’idea che siano i risultati a contare: il 57% degli intervistati di questa fascia d’età privilegia la performance rispetto all’uso della tecnologia.
Non si registrano sostanziali scostamenti tra il punto di vista dei dipendenti e quello dei manager, con differenze comprese solo tra l’1 e il 3%.
Per quanto riguarda l’importanza delle competenze in intelligenza artificiale, solo il 4% degli intervistati le considera essenziali per l’occupazione. Il 37% le giudica utili ma non decisive, il 44% dà maggior rilievo ad altre qualità professionali e il 15% non ne riconosce alcun valore.
In un contesto più ampio, si comincia a pensare dell’importanza di sviluppare il pensiero sistemico nei bambini fin dalla prima infanzia, considerandolo un elemento fondamentale in un’epoca caratterizzata dalla diffusione dell’intelligenza artificiale.
La discussione sollevata dal sondaggio si inserisce in un quadro globale in cui l’IA sta modificando profondamente il mercato del lavoro. Le aziende stanno valutando come integrare questi strumenti per aumentare efficienza e produttività, ma il dibattito resta aperto su come riconoscere economicamente le nuove competenze digitali. La percezione che l’IA possa sostituire o ridimensionare alcune mansioni convive con la convinzione che le capacità umane, come il pensiero critico e la creatività, restino centrali e vadano tutelate.

E i Droni si vanno a far friggere! La tecnologia anti-drone sviluppata dagli USA
L’azienda americana Epirus ha fornito un’impressionante dimostrazione del suo sistema di difesa a microonde Leonidas, progettato per combattere i droni. Presso il sito di test di Camp Atterbury, in Indiana, il sistema è stato in grado di neutralizzare 49 droni con un singolo impulso e, durante l’esercitazione, sono stati abbattuti 61 dispositivi, con una percentuale di successo del 100%.
I droni stanno diventando una minaccia sempre più seria: sono piccoli, possono apparire all’improvviso e sono sufficientemente economici da poter essere utilizzati in massa.
Ciò rappresenta una minaccia non solo per l’aviazione militare, ma anche per quella civile, sia per mano di teppisti o semplicemente di utenti disinformati. Pertanto, si sta sviluppando un’intera gamma di sistemi anti-drone, ognuno con i suoi vantaggi e limiti.
Leonidas è un sistema a microonde ad alta potenza che disattiva l’elettronica dei droni. Prende il nome dal re spartano Leonida, che fermò l’invasione persiana alle Termopili, e utilizza moderni semiconduttori al nitruro di gallio al posto dei magnetron obsoleti e ingombranti. Questo rende il sistema più compatto, affidabile e mobile, riduce il consumo energetico e consente un funzionamento continuo senza surriscaldamento.
La caratteristica principale di Leonidas è la sua capacità di colpire più bersagli contemporaneamente. Il sistema può colpire obiettivi specifici, creando “corridoi di sicurezza” per i droni alleati, o scatenare un impulso su un intero sciame. La versione aggiornata raddoppia la gittata del modello 2022 e il controllo software consente di personalizzare il raggio per la massima efficacia. Inoltre, l’arma è considerata sicura per le persone all’interno dell’area di utilizzo.
Durante la dimostrazione, il sistema ha gestito uno dopo l’altro diversi scenari complessi: ha abbattuto droni che attaccavano da diverse direzioni, neutralizzato dispositivi scelti dal pubblico e persino “catturato” un singolo drone, atterrandolo delicatamente in un’area prestabilita. Ma il culmine è stata la distruzione dell’intero sciame: decine di droni sono caduti a terra simultaneamente, come se i loro fili invisibili fossero stati recisi.
“Questo è un punto di svolta per la nostra azienda”, ha dichiarato Andy Lowry, CEO di Epirus. “Abbiamo dimostrato che Leonidas è in grado di contrastare sciami di droni. Sessantuno droni si sono alzati in volo durante l’esercitazione e tutti e 61 sono stati abbattuti”.

LockBit 5.0 — il ransomware cross-platform che punta agli hypervisor
A settembre 2025 è emersa una nuova incarnazione del noto ransomware LockBit, denominata LockBit 5.0. Non è solo un “aggiornamento”: è un adattamento operativo pensato per essere rapido, meno rumoroso e più impattante sulle infrastrutture virtualizzate. La caratteristica che va sottolineata fin da subito è che la 5.0 è cross-platform: sono stati identificati campioni per Windows, Linux e VMware ESXi — il che amplia la superficie d’attacco e richiede coordinamento tra team diversi (endpoint, server, virtualizzazione).
Che cosa cambia
La catena d’attacco resta la stessa, ma LockBit 5.0 la porta avanti più velocemente e con accorgimenti pensati per ridurre al minimo le tracce:
- Esecuzione “in memoria” LockBit 5.0 punta a restare “sulla RAM”. Piuttosto che lasciare file sul disco, inietta e carica codice direttamente in memoria: così l’indicatore non è più il file sospetto, ma il comportamento di processi altrimenti legittimi. Vedi applicazioni “pulite” che all’improvviso aprono migliaia di file, creano thread in serie o iniziano a parlare in rete senza un eseguibile corrispondente. Sugli EDR/NGAV ben configurati questo si traduce spesso in avvisi di code injection o di moduli caricati solo in memoria, con sequenze tipiche del tipo VirtualAlloc → WriteProcessMemory → CreateRemoteThread o uso di MapViewOfSection. Non sempre però scatta l’allarme: offuscamento, syscalls indirette e tempi diluiti possono mascherare la catena; su postazioni protette solo da AV tradizionale, è facile che passi.
- Riduzione della telemetria utile. LockBit 5.0 include azioni mirate a ostacolare la raccolta di eventi e log proprio nei momenti in cui questi dati servono di più. Questo non significa necessariamente che i log vengano cancellati sempre in modo evidente: più spesso si osservano incoerenze (mancanza di eventi attesi, salti temporali, o riduzione improvvisa del volume di eventi), disabilitazioni o alterazioni di provider di tracciamento e, in alcuni casi, comandi espliciti che svuotano i registri. In pratica, l’attaccante cerca di “zittire” gli strumenti che permetterebbero di ricostruire cosa è successo.
- Attenzione mirata agli hypervisor (ESXi). La variante pensata per ESXi colpisce direttamente i file delle macchine virtuali (i .vmdk) e può eseguire più operazioni di cifratura in parallelo per completare l’attacco molto più rapidamente. In pratica, anziché scorrere e cifrare singoli server uno per uno, l’attaccante può “saturare” un datastore in pochi minuti, riducendo drasticamente la finestra utile per intervenire. Per questo motivo è necessario osservare con attenzione alcuni segnali pratici: picchi improvvisi di I/O sul datastore, scritture intensive e ripetute sui file .vmdk e allarmi o anomalie segnalate dai sistemi di storage.
- Comportamento modulare e selettivo. Le analisi indicano che LockBit 5.0 si comporta più come un “kit” parametrizzabile che come un singolo binario monolitico. E’ possibile configurare opzioni di targeting, scegliere percorsi da includere o escludere e decidere quanto aggressiva debba essere la cifratura. Di conseguenza ci si può aspettare forme diverse dello stesso attacco a seconda della macchina colpita.

LockBit 5.0 sposta il gioco sulla memoria e allarga il perimetro: non basta più l’endpoint, vanno protetti anche gli ambienti che lo orchestrano. La risposta efficace combina patching costante, hardening degli host ESXi, monitoraggio proattivo dei log e protezione endpoint e di rete”. Backup isolate, meglio se immutabili, e testati restano essenziali per il recovery. In parallelo, è necessario ridurre la superficie d’attacco (funzionalità non essenziali off), applicare least privilege e sorvegliare le anomalie di rete. Investire in MDR e threat hunting proattivo è cruciale per individuare attività stealth prima che diventino crittografia massiva

Apple told 404 Media it has removed other similar apps too.“I am incredibly disappointed by Apple's actions today. Implementing a Kalman Filter in PostgreSQL to Smooth GPS Data
Usually databases are treated primarily as fairly dumb data storage systems, but they can be capable of much more. Case in point the PostgreSQL database and its – Ada-based – PL/pgSQL programming language, which allows you to perform significantly more complex operations than would be realistically possible with raw SQL. Case in point the implementation of a Kalman Filter by the folk over at Traconiq, which thus removes the necessity for an external filtering pipeline.
Using a Kalman Filter is highly desirable when you’re doing something like vehicle tracking using both dead-reckoning and GPS coordinates, as it filters out noise that can be the result of e.g. GPS reception issues. As noted in the article, transferring state from one row to the next requires a bit of lateral thinking, but is doable with some creative SQL usage. As PL/pgSQL is very similar to Oracle’s PL/SQL, this same code should work there too without too much porting required.
The code for the different implementations and associated benchmarks can be found on GitHub, though the benchmark results make it abundantly clear that the most efficient approach is to run an offline aggregate processing routine. This coincides with the other batch processing tasks that are typically performed by a database server to e.g. optimize storage, so this isn’t entirely unsurprising.
Mario Guevara to be deported for reporting the truth

Atlanta-area journalist Mario Guevara’s family announced today that he will be deported to El Salvador tomorrow, after spending more than 100 days in detention.
Guevara was initially arrested on June 14 while reporting on a“No Kings” protest near Atlanta. Although the charges against him were dropped, the government argued during deportation proceedings that his filming of law enforcement activities — a constitutionally protected activity — created a threat to public safety.

Le odierne dichiarazioni di Rocca sull'inceneritore come pietra tombale della differenziata a Roma esprimono alla perfezione le scelte politiche sulla gestione dei rifiuti della Capitale. I rifiuti che bruceranno saranno interamente composti da tal quale, non solo una parte, ovvero 600 mila tonnellate per oltre 30 anni.
Dopo tre anni, la raccolta differenziata è ancora ferma al palo. Le proiezioni al 2035 evidenziano un 20% di scarto: rifiuti che, pur raccolti come differenziati, finiscono comunque nell’indifferenziato.
Uno spreco enorme che potrebbe essere evitato con una efficace raccolta porta a porta, aprendo anche la strada a una futura tariffa puntuale. Invece la giunta Gualtieri certifica il fallimento del suo piano rifiuti, continuando a puntare sui cassonetti stradali, ormai trasformati in parte integrante dell'arredo urbano.
La preoccupazione espressa dal presidente Rocca si trasformi in un concreto ripensamento sulla gestione dei rifiuti a Roma favorendo il rilancio del recupero di materia possibile solo attraverso una raccolta differenziata di qualità in linea con gli ambiziosi obiettivi ambientali europei.

GAZA FLOTILLA: Israeli forces intercepted 39 boats carrying aid and foreign activists to Gaza, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, leaving only one vessel still sailing towards the Palestinian enclave, the organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla said on Thursday. The flotilla, carrying medicine and food to Gaza, consisted of more than 40 civilian boats carrying about 500 parliamentarians, lawyers and activists.
Israel's Foreign Ministry said the activists were on the way to the Israeli port of Ashdod ahead of deportation. A ministry video showed Thunberg, the most prominent of the flotilla's passengers, sitting on a deck surrounded by IDF soldiers.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla a "grave offense" against "global solidarity and sentiment that is aimed at relieving suffering in Gaza." Ramaphosa called on Israel to immediately release South Africans, including a grandson of Nelson Mandela, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, and other foreign nationals who were on the flotilla
Protests broke out in Italy following Israel's interception of the flotilla bound for Gaza. In Rome, dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the city's main train station. In Naples, several protesters blocked tracks at the main train station, forcing rail services to halt, news agency ANSA reported. Protests were also reported in Milan and Turin.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered the expulsion of Israel's entire diplomatic delegation on Wednesday following the detention of two Colombians in the flotilla and terminated Colombia's free trade agreement with Israel. Petro's office said the government would pursue all legal avenues internationally and within Israel to secure the release of the detained citizens and seek reparations.
The Istanbul chief prosecutor's office said it had launched an investigation into the detention of 24 Turkish citizens on the vessels on charges including deprivation of liberty, seizure of transport vehicles and damage to property, Turkey's state-owned Anadolu news agency reported.
The legal team organized by the Adalah Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel said it had been granted access to the Ashdod Port, where the flotilla activists are held, and has begun providing legal advice.

Secondo me non tutti hanno capito che la Global Sumud Flotilla non era partita con lo scopo di sfamare la popolazione di Gaza.
Come mai avrebbero potuto fare 40 barchette, con un carico di provviste irrisorio rispetto ai bisogni della popolazione, a sfamare Gaza?

Siamo davanti al solito caso del saggio che indica la Luna e dello stupido che gli guarda il dito.
Lo scopo della Flotilla era quello di far vedere a chi ha gli occhi socchiusi (non a chi ha gli occhi chiusi, perché tanto quelli non vedranno mai) come si comporta il governo israeliano, come sia privo di scrupoli al punto da fermare delle barchette di persone come noi, cariche di qualche pacco di farina da portare in un posto dove la gente muore di fame. Perché finché fanno schifezze agli altri non gliene importa niente a nessuno, questa volta invece erano persone come noi, gli italiani vedevano fare schifezze ad italiani come loro, i tailandesi le vedevano fare a tailandesi come loro, i brasiliani a brasiliani come loro.
Lo scopo era quello di creare indignazione tra le persone che non sono ancora indignate ma che da qualche parte un cuore ce l'hanno ancora, persone a cui magari una mezza umanità da qualche parte è rimasta, e sfruttare quell'indignazione per mettere in imbarazzo i governi come il nostro. Perché i governi come il nostro non si muoveranno finché non ci sarà una parte consistente dell'opinione pubblica che gli chiederà di farlo, perché a loro dei principi non importa nulla, i valori non li hanno, sono come cani di Pavlov che reagiscono solo a stimoli molto semplici (tipo la paura di perdere voti e quindi il potere che ne consegue).
La spedizione della Flotilla non serviva a sfamare Gaza, serve a portare noi in strada, a far pressione sui governi perché a loro volta la facciano su Israele, perché si interrompa il blocco degli aiuti e possano entrare le centinaia di camion che servono per portare a Gaza le migliaia di tonnellate di cibo e medicinali necessarie per dare un minimo di sollievo ai sopravvissuti al genocidio. Il cibo e le medicine sono già lì, a poca distanza da dove servono, i magazzini dell'ONU e delle ONG sono pieni, bisogna solo che Israele smetta di bloccare i camion.
Serviva a questo la Flotilla, non ad abbattere un blocco militare per consegnare qualche pacco di farina a Gaza.
Però capisco che se per qualcuno la Flotilla era partita per sfondare il cordone militare e sfamare Gaza allora sì, effettivamente è stato un fallimento colossale.
Ma allora il fallimento colossale non è stato questo, è stato molto prima, è stato quando le scuole hanno cominciato a sfornare persone che non hanno gli strumenti per capire cosa gli succeda intorno.

@Imprinted però da quel che vedo nel mio quotidiano, i maggiorenni di oggi non sono male. A loro i nonni avranno di certo fatto qualche concessione di troppo, ma questi nonni, erano comunque persone che avevano vissuto periodi più o meno duri e il massimo della trasgressione (social) erano le signorine di Drive In, o un po prima la copertina di Playboy.

Earth Is Getting Darker, Literally, and Scientists Are Trying To Find Out Why

Scientists have discovered that our planet has been reflecting less light in both hemispheres, with a more pronounced darkening in the Northern hemisphere, according to a study published on Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The new trend upends longstanding symmetry in the surface albedo, or reflectivity, of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. In other words, clouds circulate in a way that equalizes hemispheric differences, such as the uneven distribution of land, so that the albedos roughly match—though nobody knows why.
“There are all kinds of things that people have noticed in observations and simulations that tend to suggest that you have this hemispheric symmetry as a kind of fundamental property of the climate system, but nobody's really come up with a theoretical framework or explanation for it,” said Norman Loeb, a physical scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center, who led the new study. “It's always been something that we've observed, but we haven't really explained it fully.”
To study this mystery, Loeb and his colleagues analyzed 24 years of observations captured since 2000 by the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES), a network of instruments placed on several NOAA and NASA satellites. Instead of an explanation for the strange symmetry, the results revealed an emerging asymmetry in hemispheric albedo; though both hemispheres are darkening, the Northern hemisphere shows more pronounced changes which challenges “the hypothesis that hemispheric symmetry in albedo is a fundamental property of Earth,” according to the study.
Loeb and his colleagues suggest that asymmetry is primarily driven by the effects of climate change, reductions in aerosol pollution, and natural disasters like volcanic eruptions and wildfires. Since snow and ice are highly reflective, the thinking goes, the melting of glaciers and ice sheets due to anthropogenic gas emissions is causing a reduction in albedo, especially in the Northern hemisphere.
Meanwhile, aerosols—which stimulate the formation of clouds—are causing uneven regional albedo changes. For example, the international effort to remove harmful commercial aerosols from the atmosphere has resulted in a drop in these substances over the Northern hemisphere, and therefore cloud cover, exacerbating the darkening effect. In the Southern hemisphere, aerosol-heavy clouds generated just over the past few years by disasters like the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires and the 2021 to 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption may have brightened the albedo relative to the Northern hemisphere.
“The amount of aerosols has been increasing in the Southern hemisphere, and they've been decreasing in the Northern hemisphere,” explained Loeb. “Since aerosols reflect solar radiation, that would give you this asymmetry where you're seeing darkening in the Northern hemisphere compared to the southern Hemisphere.”
“All of these pieces added together give you this trend,” he continued. “But what was mysterious to me was that the clouds weren't compensating. If this hemispheric symmetry is a fundamental property of the system, the clouds should be giving you more reflection in the Northern hemisphere to compensate for the non-cloud properties. And I don’t see that—at least, not yet.”
Loeb’s team was able to spot this trend thanks to the long-term observations collected by CERES, a program that dates back to the late 1990s. The program has monitored the evolution of albedo in high resolution over decades, enabling the scientists to spot the new divergence from the normal symmetry.
“CERES has really opened up a new avenue of research that we couldn't do before,” Loeb said. “We had some measurements of Earth's radiation budget, but we struggled to have the same level of quality of the data.”
“Right now it's wonderful because we have very precise measurements over 25 years from CERES,” he continued. “It’s a unique opportunity for us to study things like this symmetry in a new light.”
To that end, Loeb and his colleagues plan to continue monitoring the asymmetry with CERES and probing its possible causes with more sophisticated climate models. The researchers are watching for signs that the symmetry might reemerge in the future, or if asymmetry is perhaps the new normal.
The overall darkening of Earth’s albedo is already accelerating the effects of climate change, and an asymmetric hemispheric darkening could produce its own complex impacts, including disruptive shifts in precipitation.
It’s very difficult to tease out the individual components that merge to create such complicated dynamics (Loeb calls it “unscrambling the egg”). To make matters worse, NASA is facing major cuts from the Trump administration, especially to its Earth observation satellites. CERES is due for one more launch in 2027, but these instruments are getting “long in the tooth,” Loeb said, and another program will eventually have to take up the mantle. Until then, researchers across disciplines will puzzle over why Earth is anomalously darkening, and what it might mean if this asymmetry is here to stay.
“We'll keep measuring and keep studying it, and I think this study should open the avenue for others to look at it,” Loeb concluded.

Red Hat Investigating Breach Impacting as Many as 28,000 Customers, Including the Navy and Congress
A hacking group claims to have pulled data from a GitLab instance connected to Red Hat’s consulting business, scooping up 570 GB of compressed data from 28,000 customers.The hack was first reported by BleepingComputer and has been confirmed by Red Hat itself. “Red Hat is aware of reports regarding a security incident related to our consulting business and we have initiated necessary remediation steps,” Stephanie Wonderlick, Red Hat’s VP of communications told 404 Media.
A file released by the hackers and viewed by 404 Media suggested that the hacking group may have acquired some data related to about 800 clients, including Vodafone, T-Mobile, the US Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center, the Federal Aviation Administration, Bank of America, AT&T, the U.S. House of Representatives, and Walmart.
“The security and integrity of our systems and the data entrusted to us are our highest priority,” she said. “At this time, we have no reason to believe the security issue impacts any of our other Red Hat services or products and are highly confident in the integrity of our software supply chain.”

Red Hat is an open source software company that provides Linux-based enterprise software to a vast number of companies. As part of its business, Red Hat sells consulting contracts to users to help maintain their IT infrastructure. A hacking group that calls itself the Crimson Collective claims it breached a Red Hat GitLab repository that contained information related to Red Hat’s consulting clients.“Since RedHat doesn't want to answer to us,” the hackers wrote in a channel on Telegram viewed by 404 Media, suggesting they have attempted to contact Red Hat. “Over 28000 repositories were exported, it includes all their customer's CERs [customer engagement reports] and analysis of their infra' [infrastructure] + their other dev's private repositories, this one will be fun,” the message added.. A CER is an internal document consultancy firms use to understand how its clients interact with their business. For an IT firm like Red Hat, this kind of document would contain a lot of information about a client's tech infrastructure including configuration data, network maps, and information about authentication tokens. A CER could help someone breach a network.

Government Shutdown Causes Even More Confusion for U.S. Visa Applicants
Amid the government shutdown, visa applicants are facing more confusion and are worried about potential delays, as some services essential to their application processes are “under maintenance” due to lapses in funding.The Foreign Labor Application Gateway website, which employers use for labor certification and immigration applicants use to access documentation for their applications, is down due to the shutdown, with an “Under Maintenance” notice on the site in place of the portal.
The federal government shut down on Wednesday, as Republican legislators refuse to budge on their desired cuts to Medicaid and Affordable Care Act healthcare subsidies. The last government shutdown was in 2018, also under President Donald Trump, and lasted 35 days.
“Due to a lapse in funding, all foreign labor certification activities administered by the Department’s Office of Foreign Labor Certification (OFLC) have been suspended,” the site currently says. “During this suspension, access to the Foreign Labor Application Gateway (FLAG), will be disabled and will not permit system users to prepare and submit new applications as well as submit any information associated with applications pending a final determination.”

A notice on the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs site says consular operations domestically and abroad will remain operational, however, including passports, visas, and assisting American citizens abroad. Consular services, including US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), are almost entirely fee-funded and only a small part of their funding is reliant on congress. The American Immigration Council notes that for this reason, application interviews, naturalization ceremonies, biometrics processing, and other parts of the immigration system should continue as usual, and past reports have shown that only one percent of the USCIS would likely need to be furloughed during a shutdown, but that backlogs and increased immigration enforcement from the Trump administration could mean even that one percent could create more delays.The Office of Foreign Labor Certification website shows a notice about a lapse in appropriations: “This website is currently not being updated due to the suspension of Federal government services,” the site says. “The last update to the site was 10/1/2025. Updates to the site will start again when the Federal government resumes operations.”
An Australian applicant for an E3 visa — a specific type of temporary, non-immigrant work visa for Australian citizens — told 404 Media that not being able to access the FLAG website means she can’t access or download the Department of Labor-certified Labor Condition Application she needs for her visa appointment in two weeks.
“If the shutdown is lifted prior to my visa appointment, I’ll download the LCA and be on my way. If however the shutdown goes on past my appointment date, I don’t know what I’ll do,” she said.
The immigration and visa application process, overhauled by the Trump administration since taking office, has already caused chaos and confusion for applicants. On Friday, Trump signed an executive order that adds a $100,000 fee for applicants to the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers. US-based workers visiting abroad during the announcement rushed to travel back to the US after Trump’s announcement left them only hours before Trump’s deadline at midnight on Sunday, while some employers, especially small startups, scrambled to pay the fees for their workers.

The Pirate Party Germany held its General Assembly on September 27 and 28 in Dudweiler, Germany and elected their 19th Federal Board.
Lilia Kayra Kuyumcu was elected as the new Chair. At just 18 years old, she is the youngest Chair in the history of the German Pirate Party.
She will be joined by Denis Klüver as Vice-Chair, Jutta Dietrich as Treasurer, and Babak Tubis, Wolf Vincent Lübcke, Nick Neumann, and Karsten Wehner as Board Members.
