A couple of years ago, we covered a project called Arnis, created by [Louis Erbkamm], which allowed you to generate any portion of Earth into Minecraft blocks and maps. It was already impressive, but since we last checked in the open source project has made some incredible progress.
When we first covered Arnis, it was stuck on the Java edition of Minecraft. But now the project has been updated to support the more modern Bedrock Edition, meaning you can put your home into any device’s version of Minecraft!
Beyond Bedrock version support, the actual tool has improved with proper elevation generation using data provided from NASA. This allows you to view the Alps or the Himalayas in all their voxel glory, or explore an entire map of the Moon. Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that the generation is accurate enough to be used in an actual research study involving flood mitigation education.
All of this has been made possible with help from a passionate community who have volunteered their time to assist [Louis] with the project — a testament to the power of open source.

Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. (Credit: MattKC, YouTube) What’s it like to use a 2002-era Apple eMac all-in-one in 2025? That’s what [MattKC] asked himself after obtaining one of these systems from a seller who ominously mentioned that it had been ‘left outside for years’.
The Apple iMac is a bit of a cult symbol, whether you’re talking about the iconic fruity iMac G3 or the desk lamp-like iMac G4, but few reminisce or actively collect the Apple eMac. Manufactured from 2002 to 2006, it featured the PowerPC 7450 (G4e) CPU with clock speeds ranging from 700 MHz to 1.42 GHz, as well as a 17″ CRT. In terms of design it was basically a bland iMac G3 that was firmly targeting the education markets to try and regain market share after Windows PCs had begun to eat its lunch there.
As for the model that [MattKC] purchased, it was this earliest model, featuring a 700 MHz PowerPC G4 CPU in addition to 640 MB SDRAM. Despite the seller’s description it seems to be in good nick with it firing right up, and even a glance inside after beating the challenge of 2.5 mm hex screws showed it to be in relatively good condition.
Unlike the iMac G3, you can play the Mac port of Halo on it, but the Minecraft port is very much not performant. With generally multimedia and gaming working well, it does show why the eMac was released, as it’s quite capable relative to an iMac G3 which would have struggled with the educational software of the era. We definitely hope that [MattKC] restores it to its full glory instead of ripping out its innards, as the neglected status of the eMac makes it much more likely to go extinct than PowerPC-based iMacs.

Recently, [Vinnie] aka [vinthewrench] moved from Oregon to Arkansas to start a farmstead. This is a style of farming that focuses not just on a profitable farm where produce is sold at market, but also on a homestead where much of one’s own food is grown on the farm as well. Like any farm, though, it’s extremely hard work that takes a tremendous amount of time. Automation and other technology can make a huge impact in these situations, and [Vinnie] is rolling out his own software stack to help with this on his farm.
He calls his project the Pi Internet of Things, or PioT, and as its name suggests is based around the Raspberry Pi. Since this will all be outdoors and exposed to the extremes of Arkansas weather, everything built under the auspices of this project prioritizes ruggedness, stability, and long-term support, all while avoiding any cloud service. The system also focuses on being able to ride through power outages. The server side, called piotserver, uses a REST API to give the user access to the automation systems through a web interface
[Vinnie] also goes into detail about why existing systems like Home Assistant and Open Sprinkler wouldn’t work in his situation, and why a ground-up solution like this is more appropriate for his farm. This post is largely an overview of his system, but some of his other posts go into more detail about things like integrating temperature sensors, rainfall monitoring, controlling irrigation systems, and plenty of other farm automation tasks that are useful for any farmer or gardener.
Internals of the 1900 Evershed & Vignoles Ltd 1 ohm resistance standard. (Credit: Three-phase, YouTube) Resistance standards are incredibly useful, but like so many precision references they require regular calibration, maintenance and certification to ensure that they stay within their datasheet tolerances. This raises the question of how well a resistance standard from the year 1900 performs after 125 years, without the benefits of modern modern engineering and standards. Cue the [Three-phase] YouTube channel testing a genuine Evershed & Vignoles Ltdone ohm resistance standard from 1900.
With mahogany construction and brass contacts it sure looks stylish, though the unit was missing the shorting pin that goes in between the two sides. This was a common feature of e.g. resistance decade boxes of the era, where you inserted pins to connect resistors until you hit the desired total. Inside the one ohm standard is a platinoid resistor, which is an alloy of copper, nickel, tungsten, and zinc. Based on the broad arrow mark on the bottom this unit was apparently owned by the UK’s Ordnance Board, which was part of what was then called the War Office.
After a quick gander at the internals, the standard was hooked up to a Keithley DMM7510 digital bench meter. The resistance standard’s ‘datasheet’ is listed on top of the unit on the brass plaques, including the effect of temperature on its accuracy. Adjusting for this, the measured ~1.016 Ω was within 1.6% tolerance, with as sidenote that this was with the unit not having been cleaned or otherwise having had maintenance performed on it since it was last used in service. Definitely not a bad feat.

La serata si svolgerà tramite il susseguirsi di brevi set di improvvisazione libera, con l’estrazione casuale del numero e dei nomi di chi si esibirà. Vi aspettiamo in un luogo dove la musica e l’ascolto si fondono. In loco sono disponibili una batteria, un pianoforte verticale e un impianto. La partecipazione è aperta anche a chi preferisce solamente ascoltare.
Conserere Conserere è un collettivo autogestito di musicisti e musiciste nato nel 2016, dedicato alla pratica e alla diffusione dell’improvvisazione musicale. Al centro del progetto ci sono l’ascolto, il dialogo e la costruzione di una comunità artistica aperta, inclusiva e critica, in cui ogni strumento e linguaggio può trovare spazio. Il collettivo lavora per creare una rete di supporto ed educazione sull’improvvisazione, intesa sia come spinta alla scoperta sia come capacità di adattamento. Attraverso questa pratica, Conserere promuove lo sviluppo di attenzione, creatività e consapevolezza, elementi fondamentali per far crescere sia l’individuo sia la comunità. More recent assaults on the First Amendment are dominating the headlines, but Rümeysa Öztürk has now been facing deportation for 297 days for co-writing an op-ed the government didn’t like, and journalist Ya’akub Vijandre remains locked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over social media posts about issues he reported on. Raid of journalist’s home ignores federal law and constitutional freedoms
The FBI raid of the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson, reportedly to investigate a contractor accused of mishandling classified records, marked an alarming escalation in the Trump administration’s multipronged war on press freedom. All the meanwhile, Post billionaire owner Jeff Bezos remains silent.
The Department of Justice (and the judge who approved this outrageous warrant) is either ignoring or distorting the Privacy Protection Act, which restricts law enforcement from raiding newsrooms and reporters. The administration may now be in possession of volumes of journalist communications having nothing to do with any pending investigation.
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) Chief of Advocacy Seth Stern, along with Chip Gibbons of Defending Rights & Dissent, wrote for The Guardian that, alarming as it was, the raid was the product of a decades-long backslide at both the federal and local level. And our Daniel Ellsberg Chair on Government Secrecy Lauren Harper wrote for The Intercept about how the raid was enabled by the Department of Justice’s revisions to its guidelines on searching journalists’ files. Harper previously exposed that the administration’s pretext for those revisions was a lie.
Reporter and security researcher Nikita Mazurov also wrote for us about measures reporters can take to minimize the risk to sources in the event of a raid or device seizure.
Don’t forget last week’s alarming intrusion on newsgathering
We told you last week about the House Oversight Committee’s bipartisan vote to subpoena journalist Seth Harp over a tweet identifying a high ranking military officer involved in the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Democrats reportedly supported the subpoena as part of a deal to also issue subpoenas related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. That was a big mistake — journalist subpoenas are a constitutional red line, not a bargaining chip. After all, if not for the source relationships that enabled reporters like the Miami Herald’s Julie Brown to expose Epstein’s crimes, he might still be on his island preying on young girls.
Worse yet, the subpoena will allow proponents of the Natanson raid and future intrusions to legitimize and “both sides” their assaults on the Constitution. You can use our action center tool to tell Congress to clean up the mess it made.
What the Maduro ‘extradition’ means for U.S. journalists
For journalists who work online, the most dangerous assumption is that press freedom is territorial. It is not. In the digital age, journalists publish globally by default, and states increasingly assert criminal jurisdiction globally as well.
The recent assertion of U.S. authority to abduct Maduro risks normalizing extraterritorial arrests for violations of the arresting country’s domestic laws, bypassing extradition procedures and other protections. As former federal computer crime prosecutor Mark Rasch wrote in a guest post for FPF, a country with repressive press laws could use the Trump administration’s actions to justify arresting U.S. journalists at home over online publications accessible elsewhere.

Now, trying his luck again, the allies we have chosen to keep in Europe are sending non-NATO troops to Greenland in order to protect it from a potential U.S. invasion.
If the President’s gambit is to prove a dying empire “still got it”, then his plan must be marked as a failure. The world is unamused by the United States positioning and actions, and the backlash we will have to face is one from which I’m unsure we will ever truly recover.
I understand people were tired of the status quo; we were too. But if this is the change of pace being offered, it is a marathon in the wrong direction.

JASON: I’ve started this year in the same way I spent a lot of last year: Writing about the automated license plate reader company Flock. In my career it’s been sort of weird for me to focus on one company or one thing so much for so long. I tend to get a little restless about the topics I cover, and there can sometimes be a very real fatigue with specific types of stories. After a while, people “get it,” and so the bar for a new story on a topic keeps going up. I wish this weren’t the case, and we try to cover things we feel are important, but if you’re writing about a topic and no one is reading it, then the audience might be telling you they don’t find that thing interesting anymore.
This has not yet been the case with Flock, somewhat to my surprise. I’ve been writing about surveillance technologies for a long time, and it’s rare for a specific company or specific type of technology to hold people’s interest and attention for too long.

La Cellula Coscioni di Venezia organizza l’incontro pubblico “Disposizioni Anticipate di Trattamento, istruzioni per l’uso” un momento informativo e di confronto sul tema dell’autodeterminazione.
A guidare l’incontro saranno:

Dott. Jacopo Rossi, specializzato in anestesia e rianimazione.
L’iniziativa, che si svolge presso l’Ateneo degli Imperfetti, è realizzata in collaborazione con il Gruppo Ricerca Libertaria e Semi sotto la neve, con l’obiettivo di fornire strumenti chiari e accessibili per comprendere le Disposizioni Anticipate di Trattamento (DAT), nel rispetto delle libertà individuali.
Negli ultimi mesi le violenze e gli abusi legati alla #ICE sono esplosi da questione “di nicchia” per attivisti dei diritti umani a crisi politica nazionale, con morti in detenzione e sulle strade, pestaggi, uso di armi “meno letali” contro chi protesta e un crescendo di denunce da parte di ONG e media.
Questa escalation, nel pieno del secondo mandato #Trump, rischia di trasformarsi non solo in un tema centrale delle prossime elezioni di #midterm di novembre 2026, ma anche in un banco di prova per la tenuta stessa delle libertà civili negli Stati Uniti e altrove.
Dagli ultimi report di “Human Rights Watch” e di altre organizzazioni emergono quadri di detenzione sovraffollata, condizioni sanitarie degradate, pestaggi, uso di gas e granate stordenti contro chi protesta per cibo, acqua o cure mediche, fino a casi di morte evitabile in custodia. Non parliamo solo di “mele marce”: in strutture come Fort Bliss in Texas o i centri in Florida, gli abusi appaiono sistemici, con intimidazioni, violenze fisiche e sessuali e pressioni perché le persone accettino la deportazione “volontaria”.
Parallelamente, i dati mostrano che la grande maggioranza delle persone detenute non ha condanne per reati violenti, smentendo la narrazione di un’operazione mirata a “criminali pericolosi” e confermando piuttosto una logica di repressione di massa a fini politici. L’uso mirato di ICE come strumento di terrore amministrativo verso migranti, comunità e attivisti finisce così per normalizzare uno stato d’eccezione permanente.
Le proteste, in città come #Minneapolis, Boston o New York dopo l’uccisione da parte di agenti ICE di #ReneeNicoleGood, hanno riportato al centro la questione del controllo federale sulla sicurezza e sull’ordine pubblico. La risposta del governo (con la retorica di “legge e ordine”, invio della Guardia Nazionale e teorizzazione di ICE intorno ai seggi “per controllare i non cittadini”) mostra quanto la frontiera tra repressione migratoria e intimidazione politica sia ormai sottile.
Elettoralmente, il tema è a doppio taglio. Da un lato galvanizza la base trumpiana, che vede nella durezza contro migranti e manifestanti un segno di forza; dall’altro, rischia di mobilitare un elettorato urbano, giovane, latino e afroamericano che ha già dimostrato di reagire alle violenze di polizia trasformando la rabbia in voto.
Per i #Democratici, restare prudenti significa perdere credibilità; schierarsi apertamente contro ICE e la militarizzazione può però costare consensi in stati chiave dove la paura è diventata l’argomento centrale della destra.
Sul piano giuridico, l’uso di #ICE come braccio armato interno alimenta un clima da emergenza, ma non offre un appiglio legale reale per rinviare o annullare le elezioni di midterm di novembre 2026. La data delle midterm è fissata dal Congresso, l’amministrazione è in mano agli stati e non esiste oggi alcun potere presidenziale diretto per sospenderle o cancellarle, come ricordano costituzionalisti e fact-check indipendenti che hanno demolito le allusioni a “Big Beautiful Bill” o a stati d’emergenza estesi.
Il pericolo non è tanto l’annullamento formale del voto, quanto il suo svuotamento materiale: intimidazione ai seggi, presenze minacciose di agenti, gestione caotica delle proteste, nuove restrizioni sul diritto di manifestare e sorveglianza capillare possono ridurre l’affluenza e selezionare chi ha realmente la forza, o il coraggio, di recarsi alle urne. È, in altre parole, una strategia di erosione lenta e progressiva della democrazia, che mira a rendere “normale” ciò che fino a ieri sarebbe stato impensabile.
Quello che accade con ICE negli Stati Uniti non resta mai confinato entro i confini nazionali. Quando la prima potenza mondiale legittima campi di detenzione disumani, uso sproporzionato della forza e repressione violenta delle proteste, manda un messaggio potente a tutti i governi tentati dall’inasprire le proprie politiche di sicurezza: se lo fanno loro, lo possiamo fare anche noi.
È così che, lentamente, il linguaggio dei diritti umani viene sostituito da quello del controllo; il migrante, il manifestante, il giornalista scomodo diventano variazioni di un’unica figura da neutralizzare. Per questo la battaglia contro la violenza di ICE non riguarda solo chi rischia di finire su un pullman per il confine, ma chiunque tenga ancora a uno spazio pubblico in cui dissentire non sia considerato un reato, ma un diritto.

E la gente, magari europea, che blocca sui social certi account, tipo Musk, o Trump o Borghi, lo fa più che altro per mandare un messaggio politico.
non credo che un sudamericano irregolare, negli Usa, si metta a bloccare l'ice su bs.
