@pchestek @richlv the board and officers will be announced as part of this process. The trademark questions will be resolved (transparently) as part of this process. The GmbH currently has employees so continues to exist to cover them. This is a transition and your questions are valid and useful, but I donโt have answers at this stage as the end state is not fully set (the blog post states we are looking into the correct jurisdictions etc). Honestly, I'd love to see Mastodon as a viable Twitter alternative, but by now I think it never will be. It's a completely different experience. When I open Mastodon, I see a maze of text, 3rd degree replies to I don't know what, and a star button that essentially nobody but me uses, because it does (almost) nothing.
I understand that some people like this type of experience, but me (and a lot of other ex twitter users who went to bluesky instead) would've preferred something else.
@DirkGutlin I came here to find a Twitter alternative. What I got and the reason I stayed here and on the Fediverse as a whole is that it's much better than what Twitter ever had to offer. And the star button is of the utmost importance. It tells the poster that you liked what they wrote. How is that useless?

I use the star button like that too, but somehow almost nobody else does. When I check my feed, I see usually 0 stars, even for posts that have hundreds of reposts. For me this is just a gasping unused space.
Yeah, that's probably just the favourites not reaching your server. Favourites are mainly intended to just let the author know someone liked their post, and they do all reach the author.
In any case, "clout" isn't really valued on here as much as on other social networks so it's not worth looking at numbers but what people actually post.
@DirkGutlin we use use favorite option all the time and we know others that do as well. it has a function, that function just isn't feeding some opaque algorithm. idk if the stuff you see doesn't interest you that seems like you're not following the right people. the software won't fix that for you. and yeah, no matter what software you use the fediverse is never gonna be Twitter 2 and that's a good thing. we left Twitter for a reason.

Also: I don't follow the right people? I think that's the problem. If I get a bad experience so easily on this platform, and it's my fault if I don't improve it, this will keep people from using it. I understand that active Mastodon users like this, that's why they're (still) here. But there are many more people who don't, and these are on bsky now.
@elexia My point here is that most people prefer less chaotic feeds and a more accessible interface and bsky managed this well while still giving *You* control over what you see. Mastodon could've done that too which would've made it eternally better, but they didn't.
Which seems to be fine for people who like to take the Mastodon deep dive, but terribly inconvenient for average Joe users like me.
@DirkGutlin yeah idk mastodon UI and UX could definitely use some work, though it's also difficult to balance what people want out of it. not sure other fedi software do better with this.
@elexia @DirkGutlin I don't get this at all. I use both Tusky app or the Mastodon app and I don't find either confusing at all. I have a diverse feed, all the news I want and even public transport and weather info. I use the star button. It does do something. It makes the poster feel heard - which is the point no? Sometimes I wonder does it just make sense to a different type of brain. Where is this maze of text you complain about?

Sorry, but this sounds like intense gatekeeping. I shared my experience, I get that it's not the experience of people who are happy here, but it's the experience of people who tried it here but moved to bsky. If Mastodon is not interested in those people, that's fine. Then ppl will go to bluesky.

@urbanfoxe Well, I don't think I can capture it in one image. I think the weird thing is that my feed is usually overflowing with very few very active users, and I get EVERYTHING these few active users do, be it original posts or comments to comments to comments. I like more original posts and more diversity in the posts I see.
In bsky, I have this neatly ordered due to feeds. If I want science, i get a science feed. If I want social, i check my friends feed. No suggestive algorithm. No chaos

The autoplaying videos (with sound!) and pushing of short videos - it feels so disorienting, and the lack of control just turns me off immediately. Every time I see it, I'm reminded of why I never even *wanted* to join it.
@DirkGutlin @urbanfoxe yes, there is a problem for what i call the "passive users" (which btw most of the new users are by nature): people who posts rarely.
They don't have many followers, so their posts are not seen, but also their boosts are not seen and their likes are meaningless for visibility purposes.
Moreover at the beginning you naturally start to follow the people who post content that you like, but, what it is not said enough, is that you have to choose people not only for their content but also for their posting habits, otherwise your home will soon be filled with a lot of "noise" from compulsive posters/boosters
I tell you: I've been here since 2 years, I have 1400 follows, Eugen is here since the beginning and he has only 574: he knows how to select his sources

Nothing is being said about why there would ever be a need for a more than a few big providers, once it is established that the big ones "work". As usual, centralization is looming here, by a few corps "generously" offering high-speed "discovery" for "free".
Also, nothing is said about providers sharing results of the indexing, to enable true fediverse-wide search - instead, the proposal almost inevitably points to a set of a few providers that everybody needs to feed if they want posts to be found.
"Hope" will not change that hence just saying ยปWe want to specify how a discovery provider works and interfaces with a Fediverse server instance. We hope to inspire several competing implementations of the specification.ยซ does not make much sense.

the only quibble would be the TLDs: .social and .online are controlled by USA providers. thereโs still vulnerability to abuse of power with the TLDs being under USA jurisdiction.
I think hosting Mastodon in Switzerland and Germany is the best option for keeping data private. These countries have strong data protection laws, so it makes sense for ensuring our info stays safe.

Tu vai su un client che puรฒ essere SnortSocial o altri, ti crei la tua chiave pubblica e privata, gli dai un nome e stop! Ma puoi avere anche millantamila account con lo stesso pseudonimo.

Nel fediverso invece รจ difficile per l'utente medio, tra scegliere la piattaforma, poi l'istanza (leggendo le regole di ognuna) inserire email, password, aspettare la verifica via mail dell'admin d'istanza ecc.
@shai qualsiasi ecosistema che minimizza la gestione dei dati personali deve usare l'autenticazione basata su nome utente e password. Anche la nostra istanza feddit.it non chiede email, ma necessita di questa autenticazione. Se fai a meno di autenticazione, devi compensare con un sistema di tracciamento che solitamente รจ invasivo sia per ragioni di autenticazione sia per ragioni di sfruttamento commerciale dei dati personali e comportamentali dell'utente

It seems that the time for a facebook replacement is now, just based on the sense I have gotten. A lot of my friends, who would previously have clung onto facebook through all the terrible things it did over the years, are now looking for alternatives. The current consensus for most is joining Bluesky. I would love to be able to recommend them to the fediverse equivalent, Friendica, but it is nowhere close to ready for primetime.
So my question is this. How can we work to make friendica more user friendly and develop it's features to a point that it can be a true facebook alternative? Or, do we need to come up with a new platform entirely, possibly one that is forked from Friendica, that has the required features. Specifically, these are the things I think need work:
Simplify user sign up. No one cares about servers, and I think this is one of the biggest thorns in the side of the fediverse in general. Make a single landing page, where you type in your location and will be auto assigned to a server based on the closest one to you. If one does not exist within a certain radius, a server is instantly created (details of this mechanism tbd), and a member of a dedicated team of admins will be assigned as a moderator of that server. This is just an idea, but we need to greatly simply the user sign up process and make scaling easier.
EDIT: Nevermind, it was an issue with the wrong version I downloaded. I did find a couple apps, but both were still in somewhat early development: Raccoon - apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/aโฆ Relatica - gitlab.com/mysocialportal/relaโฆ ~~A working mobile app. There is only one app I know of that is not even in beta, and I couldn't get it work at all. Most people will not use a site if it doesn't have an app.~~
Clean up of basic functionalities. Default to the most intuitive and user friendly options (no delete box enabled on posts/comments that aren't yours, infinite feed on by default, prominent option dropdown to turn on darkmode or different styles, etc). I should not be taken to someone's page when I click the "follow" button. Following should also be a two way street, and require consent. You cannot see someone's content on facebook unless they approve your friend request. This is how it should be on friendica. Improve groups. I see they exist, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to browse or search for them. Stop notifying me after I make a post. I know I made the post, I don't need to be notified. I know this is a lot, but this is my honest assessment of the situation. This is why I mentioned potentially creating a new platform. What do people think? I definitely think there is value in enabling people to have a page on the internet that is "them", that people can add and keep up with their life. That is the value that facebook provides, but the existing fediverse doesn't really have such capabilities right now. How can we change that?

Update, yea, still not functional for me. Hearting or sharing posts does nothing. When I try to comment I get an unexpected error. Even loading my profile page gives me an error of some kind. Also, no one I know is going to download an app off of GitHub, but I do understand that the play store listing is pending.
Strange. I don't consistently use it myself (I'm more a Lemmy type person), but it always worked pretty okay in my testing. I tried it again just now, and I was able to respond to someone and visit my profile without issue. Perhaps there is an issue with your friendica instance? I did my testing on friendica.world.
I'm using the older 3.1 version from f-droid, so maybe there was a regression in the 4.0 release as well, if you're using that.

The fact that you are seeing "hearts" to like makes me think it is < 0.4.0 because now there are thumbs up/down (since Friendica allows disliking too).
I really appreciate the response. You were absolutely right, I don't know how, but I had downloaded an older version. I followed the links from GitHub to f-droid, so I don't know how it happened. After downloading the new version, I was still having issues, but it was only with the logging in, which I had been having all day in the browser so I think it was an issue with the friendica.world instance. After signing up for a new instance and logging in, I can now do all the expected functions. I really appreciate the help, I'll be sure to report any other issues I encounter!
Last time I talked to the main Friendica developer they were looking for a frontend dev because their expertise is only backend stuff. I am sure they would be happy to have someone help out.
Simplify user sign up. No one cares about servers, and I think this is one of the biggest thorns in the side of the fediverse in general.
I cannot stress this enough. This complaint has to die. It's OK for the fediverse to not be ready for everybody yet. But the idea that we need to hide the fundamental building blocks of it, rather than retrain people for a different technology, has to end.
Servers matter. Servers are the core elements of all of this. The fediverse is a local-first, small social media space, dressed up as a big centralized one. We have to accept it for what it is.
Users need to decide which server they'll use, in the exact same way they do when using centralized social media. Only now, they'll be able to talk to people using other services. Whether you use Facebook or Reddit or Twitter matters. You have to choose which server to use between them. THey have different rules, and different cultures between them. This is true here, too.
Masking the server problem behind auto-assignments isn't going to work, because the developer doesn't own those servers. They have no formal relationship to those servers. They cannot vouch for those servers. If the closest fedi server to you is startrek.website and you hate nerd shit, you should not be auto-assigned to it.
If you want to simplify the Friendica signup for your friends and family, launch a Friendica-based website. Give them the URL. Now they don't need to make any decisions. Just like they don't for your Discord, or whatever else you may use that's smaller and personal.
A working mobile app. There is only one app I know of that is not even in beta, and I couldnโt get it work at all. Most people will not use a site if it doesnโt have an app.
Get coding.
Clean up of basic functionalities. Default to the most intuitive and user friendly options (no delete box enabled on posts/comments that arenโt yours, infinite feed on by default, prominent option dropdown to turn on darkmode or different styles, etc). I should not be taken to someoneโs page when I click the โfollowโ button. Following should also be a two way street, and require consent. You cannot see someoneโs content on facebook unless they approve your friend request. This is how it should be on friendica. Improve groups. I see they exist, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to browse or search for them. Stop notifying me after I make a post. I know I made the post, I donโt need to be notified. Friendica is not a social networking site. Lemmy is not a social networking site. Mastodon is not a social networking site. These are web servers that let you run your own social networking sites. Social networking sites that can connect with other small, independent social networking sites, creating an open social web.
But you should not be getting people to sign up to "Friendica". That's not a place on the internet.
I'm not saying that we should remove the option to choose servers. But as soon as you tell someone "you have a pick a server", their eyes glaze over. I fully understand how fundamental servers are to the fediverse, but users should not be forced to pick one if they don't want to (which I believe most people will not want to). Forcing people to make their own servers for their families to simplify the process is also not really a solution. What I am suggesting is some sort of scaling system for the fediverse, which will default to grouping people by locality. Again, the mechanism behind this is tbd, but I know that it is possible to quickly spin up servers on demand, and so it should be possible to auto set up servers with some default settings for people who don't care to deal with browsing through a list of servers with names such as "Patriot Nest" or "doodeman.org". It just confuses people and creates friction to them joining the fediverse. Indecision paralysis is a real thing, and some people just don't want to bother with it. Also, without this mechanism, we end up with super servers like the .world that we see on most fediverse platforms, which quickly become overloaded when the fediverse sees a surge in interest. If the fediverse wants to scale in a meaningful way, something has to change. I would argue that this would make the fediverse even more decentralized than it is, because we would see a proliferation of servers based on locality, rather than congregating based on interest, or all grouping up into one default world server for those who don't care.
The functionalities you mentioned "work", if you know how to do them. It is very difficult to figure out how to do them though, and there are no tutorials that I know of. The barrier to entry for regular people is still very high to use what should be basic functionalities. I think marketplace needs to happen, because people want it. If groups worked, that could serve the function of marketplaces in the mean time, but again, I don't really see a way to browse for groups, only manually search for them.
I think it's a bit of a semantic argument whether the servers are the site or the platform is the site. Each of the servers are running the same basic software, with some variations between them. There is a github for friendica, the software. That software is hosted on servers, with a friendica logo displayed on the top. Doesn't really matter either way, the point remains, people have a desire for alternatives, and right now this is the best one I know of, but it is still severely lacking, to the point that I am not able to recommend it to them. I am for sure hoping to help out however I can. That includes coding. I'm not a web engineer though, so I can only do so much for now. There is a sense of urgency though, so I will do my best.

All of Reddit is not going to migrate at the same time, that was June 2023. Nowadays, only a few people are interested enough to leave to have a look at subs like /r/Redditalternatives. Those few people can join those two servers without issue.

Being generous, let's say 75% of reddit is bots. Then let's say 10% of the actual people decide to move to Lemmy. That's still 30 million people. The infrastructure is not ready for it. I've seen it happen in some bursts of interest, people swamp an instance, the instance doesn't work because too much traffic, and people give up on the fediverse entirely because it didn't work for them. If you want the fediverse to grow, you need to plan for growth, not just figure out a plan on the fly.
I visit /r/Redditalternatives almost daily to suggest Lemmy to people looking for an alternative.
That sub is very quiet. My conclusion is that most of the people are happy with using current Reddit, be it with revanced mobile clients, or old.reddit on mobile.
Case in hand, Discuit.net, a centralized, easy to sign up website, has less than 200 weekly commenters. Lemmy has 42000 monthly active users.
That's probably how many people are actually interested in using a Reddit alternative. It's similar to the WhatsApp to Signal migration. The vast majority of the population does not care.
I would say the problem with discuit, and other centralized alternative sites for that matter, is that there is no draw to them, other than being an alternative. I think people have been burned by traditional centralized social media going south after new leadership or poor decisions by existing leadership. They see that they are being monetized and manipulated and are sick of it. This is the draw of the fediverse, in my opinion, that no one can own it or control it, and people are free to run it in a decentralized manner, as a form of communication should be. That combined with lack of advertising for an overarching concept to draw people in (i.e., people might sign up for Mastodon looking for a twitter alternative and stumble across Lemmy or pixelfed), and it makes it hard for people to learn about this single centralized alternative site, unless they are really not into the fediverse as a concept and ok with the possibility of that alternative going to crap eventually. I had honestly not heard of discuit until you mentioned it, and I would imagine the people who are aware of it is pretty small. And I'm someone who is pretty well versed in social media alternatives. Compare it to a more well known (but arguably still pretty shitty) alternative Mewe, which has 20 million registered users and 170k active users as of 2023, and I think it paints the picture that there is a real desire for alternatives. Threaded forums are a very niche type of social media. People around you usually know about Facebook and Twitter, Reddit not so much.

I totally agree with you @Kichae , but in a way I also agree with @korendian , because having the choice between multiple servers is FUNDAMENTAL for the Fediverse to be truly free, but it is unquestionably a great difficulty for the typical user who no longer has time to think and choose: time has been taken away from him!
In my opinion, the best solution is to maintain this immense wealth constituted by federated servers, but to start introducing customized Apps from instance administrators that are installed and that are already set up to automatically register the user.

And they're especially important for a service like Friendica, where if my memory serves, you don't see activity on the server when you go to their page until after you've signed up, so there is no preview of the culture

The issue I see is that while most nerdy tech type folks can easily wrap their heads around the concept, most lay people cannot. That's not to say that picking a server of your liking should go away, but for the onboarding process for the masses, which I would think most proponents of the fediverse would want to include, the process needs to be a lot more seamless. Automated stuff in the background that keeps the decentralization, but doesn't bother the user with the need to worry about it. It's simply improving the user experience. I realize it's work, but I think it's work worth doing.

There. That's all there's needed to get about "servers" at the basest level, and to understand what the "subscribed" and "local" feeds are about. Grandmas already effortlessly navigate all the pathfinding needed to install suspicious betting apps disguised as videogames on their phones and you're telling me people can't "get" servers?
While it makes sense to make the onboarding process easier, that shoudld not come at the cost of obviating a core and foundational step as can be our equivalent to "create your email account". Facebook pages are no longer an added value. Today the only added value for Facebook are Facebook Groups, distributed throughout the world: local groups, thematic groups, political groups. Take away Groups from Facebook and that platform no longer has any value! Friendica is today the only software that allows you to manage social groups in an excellent way (Friendica groups are Activitypub groups, exactly like Lemmy Communities!), but unfortunately the visualization of groups in Friendica is still not up to the task.

i think most of this disconnect stems from you wanting this to be just like big centralized services. it's honestly delusional. in another reply you state that "lemmy.world couldn't handle 10M users". maybe, but decentralization is only going to make it worse. every lemmy server needs to broadcast every action to every other server which has users in that community. every post and like needs to be stored in all relevant instance dbs. this generates an insane amount of traffic and data. if the lemmy network suddenly gained 1000 servers, each with 10k users, the new replication traffic may stomp smaller instances to the ground.
the idea of a "global square" is naive and we should move over. it just limits us all because a platform which caters to everyone must be built around the common ground, and the common ground for everyone isn't that much ground. a platform that caters to everyone caters to no-one: see mainstream social media and how it's going. fedi is great because it's a whole different model: small islands which can interconnect. this is why picking a server is so important and you should not hide it from the user: you're not signing up to mastodon, you're signing up to furry.engineer or fosstodon! you can interact with the other instance just fine, but it matters where you register!

None of this should be surprising, given the fediverse is very largely supported by great people donating a lot of time. And remember, they're not doing it for you specifically, and they're usually doing it for their own interest or goals.

not at all because i know a good reason for it: fediverse doesn't scale well if expected to replicate fully and be a "central plaza". every server owning every post from billions of users is a very prohibitive design, especially if you expect self-hosters funded by their wallet or donations
i really think we should try to change how we do social media, not make the same thing again. if you just want that, atproto is likely more fitting, AP is decentralized, not distributed! things like nomadic identity would make the "server issue" obsolete. replies collections permit on-demand fetching of replies. activity signing and forwarding could provide real network-wide broadcasts

And even if it is/was true, looking at what came before, you'd just be paving the path to become that which you were against. If one is to depend on a single element, when it fails, it becomes the failure point for the whole ecosystem. Like with the instance I originally stuck to, Kbin.Social, where, if was the sole instance of the federated forums, when it died, the "fediverse" as a whole would have died overnight. Also, a centralized platform is far easier to be taken over by either good or bad actors, and at least with fragmentation, when you notice degradation in one of the pieces of the fediverse, you can easily jump to a platform that hasn't been compromised while not having to build the community and groups from scratch. Sites with specific niches and scopes that still allow for integration, and the culture that ensues, are also an alien concept on a centralized site, and what takes over basically becomes the face of the site's ecosystem as a whole. With the federation/defederation system, however, it's much easier for a site to build its own ecosystem while letting in and out just enough of/to other instances to oxygenate it. And lastly, like with email and Linux, while some may be rather passionate to defend it, I think that, despite that, it's still a technology, or at least an idea, with great potential, even if slow but constant, as, once more, anyone can make instances in their own vision, or join a platform that better fits what they need while not making a walled garden to force users to stick to it.

In alcuni casi ci sono istanze tematiche in cui gli iscritti la vivono come fosse un gruppo. Un questi casi ci si puรฒ iscrivere a piรน istanze (magari ti fai un account per parlare di musica e uno per parlare di politica), ma tecnicamente puoi interagire con qualunque social del fediverso, non solo mastodon

@lorenzoci Il Fediverso รจ un sistema eterogeneo d'istanze anche molto diverse, ma tutte interconnesse fra loro per merito di uno standard di comunicazione.
Le istanze sono molto diverse fra loro: per esempio stasera ho scoperto esistere istanze Mobilizon, che servono non a chattare ma a contenere eventi come date di spettacoli teatrali, concerti, riunioni eccetera.
E la risposta alla tua domanda รจ no: Bluesky non รจ federato, anche se esiste uno strumento (chiamato bridge) che in modo un po' macchinoso permette qualche comunicazione tra i due mondi. L'istanza da cui ti scrivo ora (Poliverso), fra le sue tante funzionalitร ha anche quella di essere client Bluesky, tuttavia il Fediverso e Bluesky (se escludiamo il bridge che perรฒ รจ un artificio) non comunicano fra loro.

Bluesky utilizza un altro protocollo, per questo la comunicazione con il fediverso non รจ diversa ma deve avvenire tramite "ponti" che traducono da un linguaggio all'altro.
@GaMe Vogliamo complicare un po' le cose? Esiste anche un "lato oscuro" del Fediverso che non comunica tramite il protocollo Activity Pub ma tramite un altro protocollo che si chiama Diaspora. L'istanza da cui sto scrivendo supporta entrambi gli standard, cioรจ vede l'intero Fediverso. In questo momento Diaspora sta vivendo un momento di forte rilancio, una vera "seconda vita", per merito della sua incompatibilitร con i social dell'odiosa azienda Meta.

Fai l'esempio "no pornografia" (ma lo stesso vale per contenuti tipicamente non ammessi di mastodon, come fake news, razzismo, etc). Si limita ai contenuti postati direttamente o a tutte le interazioni? (follow, boost, risposta, ...)

While the fediverse is a decentralized platform where different service providers have different moderation policies, at mastodon.social, hate speech is prohibited, and we will take action on any Threads account found violating our policies. I would strongly urge anyone with a Threads account to reconsider their alignment with the new direction at Meta and move to Mastodon instead.

@davidaugust Yes. Sadly the interoperability on Threads' side is still lacking in this aspect, and they cannot move accounts between servers like Mastodon users can. However, at least those who migrate can re-follow their Threads contacts manually to help them make the transition to Mastodon. Maintaining interoperability from our side is important to enable this.
It got me to delete my Threads and Instagram accounts yesterday, even though I was mainly using them as placeholders at this point. My Facebook account has been deleted for many years.
@fasnix I've had a Pixelfed account for a while and I think it's very good for sharing and engaging with other people's images. However, the addicting feature for Instagram is Reels. It's literal brain rot. So I'm happy to have it out of my life. I suppose Loops will try to be a less addicting version of Reels, but I'm good with just using Mastodon and using the rest of my free time for better things.
Eugen, sorry, but, if now Threads has stated they will not comply with any common moderation policies, do you still think .social should federate with them?
Agreed that Meta's changes are troubling and concerning. So I would strongly urge you and any instance admin exposing their users to the harassment there to reconsider their alignment with Threads and defederate now .
That's expecially for you and mastodon.social. Think about the message that you're sending: "Instead of proactively protecting people on this instance, we'll wait for you to be harassed and then take action on individual harassers. And, we'll make that the default for new Mastodon users!"

The changes to the wording of the #moderation policies #Facebook and #Threads are deeply concerning to hear about, however, they feel more like they are openly admitting what has always been the case than any substantive change. The company has always had an internal policy, like most other corporate social networks, to allow #HateSpeech and other #misinformation to proliferate, as these drive the engagement metrics that drive revenue, on top of often aligning with the values of leadership.
At #TechHub, our policy has, so far, been a "wait and see" approach. We have not blocked Threads yet, but if the time comes when they do finally federate, if ever, we are committed to the plan of taking server level action should their lack of moderation become too much of a problem for us.
Either way, this only underlines the need to bring more people into the #Fediverse network, and away from the large corporate #SocialNetworking services.

Eugen, the OWNER OF THREADS and the entire platform guidelines violate "our policies". It's not about a single account.
Do they still meet the federation requirements? .online and .social already don't federate with many instances that explicitly allow and/or even target certain audiences and content.
so that means that for the moment you continue federating threads at the instance level? Is this subject to ongoing scrutiny in regards to metas behavior?
So the responsibility for moderating federated Threads posts/accounts passes to the (often unpaid, volunteer) moderators of instances that federate with them.

Any other instance with the lack of moderation that Threads has - and will have to a much, much larger extent after this change of policy - would have been defederated by the majority of other instances long ago.
With its open signups and federation with Threads, it seems likely that more and more instances will defederate from mastodon.social as time goes on.
That would be a great shame unless, of course, there are plans to sell it to Meta in due course.
I find negativity generally annoying and counterproductive, which is why I love platforms or apps that allow *me* to decide what to filter out. (I have numerous filters set up in Ivory because while I appreciate someoneโs creativity and many things they share, I absolutely do not want to hear their political opinions, regardless of their โside.โ) So while I understand your perspective here, I also wonder who determines what constitutes speech that is not allowed in any given category.
individual account blocking is fine and all, but does mastodon.social not have a policy to block entire servers, if their moderation policy (or practices based on observed evidence) systemically support those problematic accounts?
i wish most admins on fedi would make a strong distinction between any speech (hate, misinfo etc) and unwanted tagging. as part of the open web, people can post whatever they want on their blog. the problem arises when we force people to see stuff they don't want to. the fedi avoids most of this by not having algos or ads. mods should be harsh on bothering others & fediblocking servers that don't police abusive accounts is also appropriate imo. but threads can't even tag us yet.
Who decides what hate speech is anyways? Meta goes from one extreme to another. I have seen posts about the war in Gaza being deleted by these so called 'moderators'.

applied to the real world, this means users with accounts on mastodon.social are not allowed to use hate speech. Users on threads are, explicitly. Their admin has said there are almost no rules at all. This entire instance is now at risk of the bullying and harassment that drove me away from fb and Twitter years ago, and you're explicitly allowing it, possibly even approving it
as a Queer person, Meta is no longer safe for me - it hasnโt been for a while, but things now explicitly against my community. It would really send a message to defederate Threads.
I say this with respect, but this is what happens when you trust Mark Zuckerberg. This pattern has repeated itself over and over and over. It's not like you weren't warned.

@fubaroque At present we receive very few reports about Threads accounts. 68 in total since its launch. For comparison, we handle about 4.4K reports every month.
@fubaroque don't you think that might be partly due to pre-selection? It doesn't quite matter if you allow them access to the most vulnerable who don't understand all this stuff to moderate their own experience. But people that are predisposed to be hurt by threads and know how to protect themselves will have blocked threads already on their account. This doesn't mean your users aren't hurt more by it, but those people might not report their abuse for one reason or the other. I don't think there's a valid excuse to federate with an instance whose policy is "you can use slurs to gender minorities or gay people". You've defederated for less, I know you have. You've agreed to the server covenant, that states you agree this is a defederatable act. Please just look at this rationally, you've talked a big game about wanting to improve moderation, this is your chance to prove it and protect the fedi from more fragmentation. This is going to hurt us all if you don't.

been trying to get my friends to join here, no chance sadly...somehow they feel like it's too complicated or don't want yet another account...I do like it here on Mastodon very much, though. I've even recently moved from mastodon.online to social to be better able to invite friends...but it is to no avail yet....
I've already added threads.net to my Mastodon server's Block List and Suspend list. Not interested in seeing any content or accounts from threads.net. My wording & terms might not be accurate but its 100% blocked on my server.
Free speech is not troubling. We're adults. We can think for ourselves and don't need nannies policing our content for anything that doesn't line up with an accepted narrative. Community notes is far from perfect but handing fact checking to the community is the only way you can promote both freedom AND the truth.
We are now two generations into 'reality tv', which set the ball in motion to conflate scripted conflict as reality which, in conjunction with religious fundamentalism, has fueled the ability of the conservative extreme to bend reality.

Already moved over to Mastodon, along with Bluesky. These are my primaries, and I still use X, but I'm not in support of Meta apps, and anyone buying into Zuckerburg's "free-speech" community note rhetoric, clearly doesn't understand the end game.
If you're waiting for @Gargron to do the right thing and defederate from Threads, maybe something that you can do personally is to migrate away from mastodon.social โ there are better places to be, and if enough people start leaving maybe it will give Eugen the kick in the pants he seems to need.
My 12 year's on Twitters ended in January 2023 and I joined Mastodon. My 18 years on Facebook is being replaced by Bluesky. Pixelfed has replaced Instagram. I'm torn about WhatsApp, my last contact with many friends and real world social networks.

@PaulaToThePeople the fact I can block anyone I want means I would rather the provider mind their own business in most cases. I can see in some extreme cases where blocking a whole instance might be needed, but in most cases I'm a big boy and can manage my own blocking.

I have a threads account but Its largely been abandoned for the last few months as I take a deep look at what those platforms deliver for their end users. Threads always had a way more corporate feel to it and towards the end of my usage of the platform, began to be filled with more AI Slop as meta desperately looked to keep the platform alive. Formattazione post con titolo leggibili da Mastodon
Come saprete, con Friendica possiamo scegliere di scrivere post con il titolo (come su WordPress) e post senza titolo (come su Mastodon). Uno dei problemi piรน fastidiosi per chi desidera scrivere post con il titolo รจ il fatto che gli utenti Mastodon leggeranno il vostro post come se fosse costituito dal solo titolo e, due a capi piรน in basso, dal link al post originale: questo non รจ di certo il modo miglior per rendere leggibili e interessanti i vostri post! Con le ultime release di Friendica abbiamo perรฒ la possibilitร di modificar un'impostazione per rendere perfettamente leggibili anche i post con il titolo. Ecco come fare:
A) dal proprio account bisogna andare alla pagina delle impostazioni e, da lรฌ, alla voce "Social Network" al link poliverso.org/settings/connectโฆ B) Selezionando la prima sezione "Impostazione media sociali" e scorrendo in basso si puรฒ trovare la voce "Article Mode", con un menu a cascata C) Delle tre voci disponibili bisogna scegliere "Embed the title in the body"

secondo me il valore aggiunto di Facebook sono i gruppi. Nel Fediverso esiste qualcosa di simile ai gruppi Facebook (e tu sei su Friendica, che รจ una delle poche piattaforme che li possono gestire al 100%), anche se non sono ancora cosรฌ facili da usare come i gruppi Facebook.
Penso che lavorare per rendere facile l'utilizzo dei gruppi del Fediverso sia dirimente per accogliere gli utenti Facebook.

@Roberto Pellegrino รจ un problema che ho anch'io e che anch'io mi sto ponendo, anche se stavo maturando la decisione anche prima delle dichiarazioni di Marco MontagnaDiZucchero (libera interpretazione dal Tedesco).
Ho provato a fare qualche post su Facebook, in cui chiedevo chi fosse a conoscenza del mondo libero e/o chi volesse spostarsi, ma l'algoritmo in qualche modo rileva di cosa sto parlando e non lo mostra a nessuno. ๐คฌ
@Il Simone Viaggiatore oltre allโ algoritmo posso anche parlarne alla gente ma non sentono la voglia di iscriversi a un social che non sia mainstream. Da una parte ammetto che pur usando poco i social, perderei sicuramente i legami con tante persone che usano Facebook, e inoltre ci sono anche tanti gruppi che mi interessano. Vorrei un trasferimento di massa su istanze Friendica per giustificare, nel caso, la cancellazione dellโaccount ma probabilmente voglio la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca.
Per me al momento non รจ pensabile staccare la spina, per tanti motivi tra cui gli stessi tuoi. Per ora, non faccio che parlarne con gli amici e aprire Facebook il minimo indispensabile. Non รจ una soluzione, ma รจ qualcosa, un passo.

@rpellegrino @simoneviaggiatore @Informa Pirata Io avevo letto qualche tempo fa, in realtร parecchio tempo fa, di una proposta fatta agli sviluppatori di Friendica perchรฉ permettessero, pur senza la possibilitร di postare risposte, almeno la possibilitร di seguire account e gruppi Facebook. Da implementare come un feed RSS, tipo le news. Poi perรฒ non ho sentito piรน nulla, quindi suppongo la cosa sia morta lรฌ. Peccato perchรฉ, permettendo comunque un collegamento, avrebbe facilitato psicologicamente la transizione da Facebook a Friendica.
@marcolo Friendica consentiva di gestire in lettura e scrittura il proprio account Facebook, ma diversi anni fa le API di Facebook sono state tolte, cosรฌ come avrebbe fatto Musk con Twitter qualche anno dopo. Oggi Friendica consente ancora di gestire il proprio account Bluesky e Tumblr
@Roberto Pellegrino io ho risolto cosรฌ: ho mandato un messaggio a tutti i miei contatti, breve, chiaro e conciso, descrivendo che non volevo piรน supportare quel prodotto perchรฉ a favore di cyberbullismo, vendita dati personali e a supporto di un governo scandaloso. Ho suggerito alcune piattaforme del fediverso per sostiture i tre prodotti Meta che stavo abbandonando. Alchรฉ se sono amici o interessati davvero a interagire con me possono comunque scrivermi sms, email o chiamarmi, se non anche raggiungermi di persona. Se non lo sono ed erano solo ammassati nei contatti, nessuno dei due perde nulla a livello sociale. Non รจ la app a salvaguardare una amicizia, lรฌ ci si fa solo i fatti altrui con -spesso- tanto disinteresse, piรน per abitudine a scrollare e mettere like o giudicare sempre e comunque che per reale confronto costruttivo utile ad un qualsiasi tipo di relazione. Alcuni familiari, colleghi e amici mi hanno seguita almeno su Signals, altri mi inviano sms e mi chiamano quando possono. Non รจ cambiato nulla. Ci convincono che gli amici sono solo su quelle app, ma quelle app servono solo per fare marketing, di reale social non hanno piรน niente.

Perรฒ รจ oggettivo che per chi ha pagine o profili pubblici difficilmente verremo seguiti nel fediverso solo perchรฉ lo pubblicizziamo. Non so, sto riflettendo ad "alta voce" e magari sbaglio.

Le organizzazioni non commerciali (istituzioni, associazioni, comitati, partiti, sindacati) invece **DOVREBBERO** proprio aprire un profilo nel Fediverso. Non รจ neanche necessario che chiudano il loro profilo Facebook o Instagram, che garantisce loro il contatto con i vecchi follower e assicura una portata maggiore del Fediverso, ma dovrebbero semplicemente dare una possibilitร diversa ai cittadini che li vogliono seguire senza essere tracciati.

If you are looking for some inovative fediverse client for android to browse its contents I have started using Raccoon for Friendica recently which is also working fine with Mastodon and its forks. It has some nice accessibility related features like accessibility actions when browsing timeline, as few swipes in the timeline as possible, alt text for images, ability to play audio files attached to posts. And even more.
Further features are almost ready and will follow in the coming days. This is includes some more complex features like aggregating events from other remote ActivityPub actors and improvements like better accessibility in the admin UI.
We are looking forward to feedback from users. You can find our guidelines for contributing here.
Unfortunately, interoperability with other applications is still limited, often caused by unresolved issues within other applications. However, we all are all working on it and are confident that things will be smoothed out in the course of this year!

Compatibility with multiple event plugins simultaneously, as we found that switching between plugins is common and maintaining archives is essential.
Event Aggregation from the Fediverse: follow other ActivityPub profiles to get and display their events. Will only be available with select event plugin integrations.
Map WordPress event categories to federated event categories, ensuring consistency across platforms.
Customizable event summaries for platforms like Mastodon that donโt natively support events in ActivityPub.
Send reminders (via Announce or custom Note) to followers at a configurable time before the event starts.
A streamlined admin dashboard that includes health checks and feedback to guide users to easily resolve faulty configurations.
Security and accessibility review
A security and accessibility review is currently taking place, and we will also be adapting the results of this.
Mobile Tile Server can be used as a HTTP server, serving Map Tiles from the device storage. When the server is running you can access the tiles from different mapping applications.

What is Friendica

Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2024.12 release would be cd friendica git pull bin/composer.phar install --no-dev cd addon git pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
Using the Archive Files
Due to unforseen changes in the CI not possible at the moment.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database this update might run for days.

Feedback about the news posts: I find them a bit unstructured and every news post contains the same upgrade instructions, which maybe are better kept in a wiki. Not sure the contribute and upgrade sections are needed for the news posts. Would love to see a stronger focus on the actual changes of the release. The small 4 teaser items give a slightly wrong impression of all the things that happened in this release.
@wilhelm when we had not added the update instructions to the release notes, people complained that they were hard to find and the links were not spottet - hence we added them to the release notes.
Understood. And still: having the steps in a proper wiki (looking at the open MKdocs PR github.com/friendica/friendica/pull/11702), the release notes could just have a link to installation / update steps which would make the release notes more readable.

I think the upgrade instructions should be left in the release notes. They are germane to the topic. What purpose does it serve to send people all over the place, to sacrifice convenience, just to save a few lines of writing and then make the process more complicated?
Having the information needed to upgrade should be handy and in one place, and with the other upgrade information, IMHO, so there is less chance of something being overlooked. There can often be no return from a mistake during upgrading.

This is mainly a maintenance/bugfix release with no brand new features, just: - chore(l10n): translation updates; - fix(10n): format specifier used in hashtag list; - chore(qa): add more unit tests; - chore: add mentions of new contributors.

Come sta reagendo il Fediverso alla progressiva federazione di Threads?
Nel caso specifico ci occupiamo di Mastodon, tuttora la piattaforma social pilastro portante del Fediverso, ma a federazione completata potremmo anche estendere lโosservazione.
Al momento (fine luglio 2024), in attesa di dati coerenti e sistematici, abbiamo preso in esame le prime 50 istanze Mastodon mondiali piรน popolose e attive.
Non ci interessa indicare chi blocca o non blocca Threads, non รจ una caccia alle streghe e gli amministratori sono liberi di gestire le istanze secondo i propri modi di intendere il Fediverso.
Ci interessa mostrare dati accorpati, ben contestualizzati, che rappresentino realisticamente lโattuale scenario.
Totale utenti attivi mensili delle prime 50 istanze Mastodon: oltre mezzo milione (poco piรน di 501.000 su un totale di poco piรน di 788.000); quindi, come campione siamo abbondantemente oltre la copertura del 50% (poco piรน del 56% del totale degli utenti attivi mensili su Mastodon).
Istanze che bloccano Threads tra le prime 50: 10 (20%).
Totale utenti attivi mensili delle 10 istanze che bloccano Threads: circa 45.800.
Istanze che non bloccano Threads tra le prime 50: 40 (80%).
Totale utenti attivi mensili delle 40 istanze che non bloccano Threads: circa 455.600.
Guardare al mero numero di istanze che bloccano o non bloccano Threads, non contestualizzando i dati, รจ completamente fuorviante.
Prendiamo per esempio dieci istanze: nove monoistanza (istanza di un singolo o pochissimi utenti) che bloccano Threads e unโistanza di un milione di utenti che non blocca Threads. Possiamo affermare che il 90% delle istanze campione sta bloccando Threads. Affermazione formalmente corretta. Ma stiamo anche dando una corretta rappresentazione della realtร (o stiamo facendo cherry picking)? ๐

@macfranc A me piacciono molto anche i loro client. Tecnicamente sono incantato dal protocollo e dall'architettura di nostr, ma credo che l'immondizia che circola ne sia diretta conseguenza. Il fatto รจ che implementa una decentralizzazione totale, senza istanze, rendendo impossibile la moderazione, e per questo attrae tutti quei contenuti che sarebbero ostacolati da qualsiasi piattaforma nel fediverso, o avrebbero l'ambizione di esserlo.
@luca Credo che nostr sia piรน decentralizzato del fediverso perchรฉ profilo e messaggi non sono legati ad uno specifico relay, e mi pare che la pubblicazione di un post avvenga attraverso una manciata di relay diversi. Se รจ cosi, i contenuti non attraversano un singolo nodo che possa controllarli e questo dovrebbe rendere appositamente difficile, se non impossibile, la moderazione.
inutile dire che non appoggiarsi a server o relay comporta un grandissimo lavoro dell'app, che praticamente fa da server personale e deve scaricare tutto quanto in locale quando si collega.

Partendo dall'inizio: ho cercato sui motori di ricerca "come funziona Nostr" e il primo titolo รจ un video su un canale relativo alle criptovalute, di un tale Alessandro Mazza.
Alessandro lo spiega in modo abbastanza chiaro ma secondo me a un certo punto confonde, o almeno io mi sono sentita confusa quando ha parlato della chiave privata come "firma digitale", dicendo che รจ il modo di identificare un utente da un altro.
La "firma digitale" perรฒ รจ altra cosa - sempre crittografia ma ha valore legale e se uno si chiama all'anagrafe Severino Sparaballe, quella รจ legata al suo codice fiscale e (almeno in teoria) nessuno lo clona.
Nostr, invece, no.
Tu vai su un client che puรฒ essere SnortSocial o altri, ti crei la tua chiave pubblica e privata, gli dai un nome e stop! Ma puoi avere anche millantamila account con lo stesso pseudonimo.
Severino Sparaballe quindi ha la sua public e private key, associata a niente - nessun indirizzo email o altro dato e questo รจ interessante, specie se รจ uno che in rete parla di temi delicati e vuole tutelarsi da regimi e cose varie. Non si discute.
Poi perรฒ arriva Franco Onesti, rivelatore di segreti inconfessabili, si mette nome Severino Sparaballe, anche la foto del tizio in questione, chiave privata e pubblica nuove di palla, e manda in giro per Nostr l'opposto di quello che dice Severino reale, nessuno sarร in grado di distinguere chi sia quello vero da quello finto.
NIP-05: da quello che ho capito c'รจ modo di identificarsi con un nome "umanamente leggibile" con la chiocciola davanti, come quelli del Fediverso e c'รจ pure un plugin WordPress che ho installato per farlo. Non ho perรฒ idea se funzioni e come verificare se รจ andato davvero a buon fine.
Questione relay: se non ho capito male sono ancora piรน decentralizzati delle istanze, io del fediverso a volte ho perplessitร perchรฉ non รจ detto ad esempio che i client mastodon funzionino anche con friendica, con nostr invece non hai problemi perchรฉ se ti colleghi a qualunque relay basta che tu abbia la chiave pubblica o privata, magari salvate in un'estensione browser, gli dici "login with extension" e vai dentro diretto.
Contenuti e spazzatura: io ho usato un client per iOS che si chiama Damus e mi sono trovata subito in home dei contenuti di estrema estremissima destra. Roba che manco l'algoritmo di Facebook mi fa.
Pazienza, sto studiando non ci sto interagendo; piรน che altro voglio capire quanto e se sia proponibile per trasmettere contenuti e le limitazioni, quanto e se siano pubblici, con la storia di Trump e Musk voglio capire con quali sistemi posso continuare a scrivere in modo libero in modo da avere meno probabilitร di ricevere blocchi o oscuramenti "shadowban".
Fosse per me butterei su tutto su Nostr, curando i filtri; ma poi se uno ti deve seguire penso gli serva Nostr apposta.
Sรฌ, effettivamente solo il p2p puรฒ essere definito totalmente decentralizzato. Grazie per avermi segnalato scuttlebut, credo che tecnicamente possa piacermi anche piรน di nostr. I punti meno attraenti per me, a caldo e senza averlo provato? L'assenza di moderazione ed il network ad invito.
purtroppo l'anarchia non รจ possibile in un contesto digitale, perchรฉ chi ha piรน risorse puรฒ essere dominante.
In questo senso, la moderazione di qualsiasi comunitร digitale รจ fondamentale se ovviamente รจ degna di fiducia e se mantiene regole chiare (che poi รจ esattamente quello che si intende con la parola "federazione").
Certamente la Federazione puรฒ costituire un rischio, un punto di vulnerabilitร , ma รจ anche una protezione.
Del resto il Fediverso non รจ un "servizio critico", non deve garantire alta affidabilitร , alta sicurezza e alta flessibilitร , ma deve solo consentire agli utenti di interagire quanto piรน liberamente possibile
c'รจ una cosa che, a mio avviso, andrebbe urgentemente implementata su mobilizon.it: l'autenticazione a due fattori, come avviene per pixelfed, peertube e altri.
