If you haven’t heard of Minecraft, well, we hope you enjoyed your rip-van-winkle nap this past decade or so. For everyone else, you probably at least know that this is a multiplayer, open world game, you may have heard that running a Minecraft server is a good job for maxing out a spare a Raspberry Pi. Which is why we’re hugely impressed that [PortalRunner] managed to squeeze an open world onto an ESP32-C3.
Of course, the trick here is that the MCU isn’t actually running the game — it’s running bareiron, [PortalRunner]’s own C-based Minecraft server implementation. Rewriting the server code in C allows it to be optimized for the ESP32’s hardware, but it also let [PortalRunner] strip his server down to the bare essentials, and tweak everything for performance. For example, instead of the multiple octaves of perlin noise for terrain generation, with every chunk going into RAM, he’s using the x and z of the corners as seeds for the psudorandom rand() function, and interpolating between them. Instead of caves being generated by a separate algorithm (and stored in memory), in bareiron the underground is just a mirror-image of the world above. Biomes are just tiled, and sit separately from one another.
So yes, what you get from bareiron is simpler than a traditional Minecraft world — items are simplified, crafting is simplified, everything is simplified, but it’s also running on an ESP32, so you’ve got to give it a pass. With 200 ms to load each chunk, it’s playable, but the World’s Smallest Minecraft Server is a bit like a dancing bear: it’s not about how well it dances, but that it dances at all.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Minecraft’s server code re-written: some masochist did it in COBOL, but at least that ran on an actual computer, not a microcontroller. Speaking of low performance, you can’t play Minecraft on an SNES, but you can hide the game inside a cartridge, which is almost as good.

I’ve been flying quadcopters a fair bit lately, and trying to learn some new tricks also means crashing them, which inevitably means repairing them. Last weekend, I was working on some wiring that had gotten caught and ripped a pad off of the controller PCB. It wasn’t so bad, because there was a large SMT capacitor nearby, and I could just piggyback on that, but the problem was how to re-route the wires to avoid this happening again.
By luck, I had just watched a video where someone else was building up a new quad, and had elegantly solved the exact same routing problem. I was just watching the video because I was curious about the frame in question, and I had absolutely no idea that it would contain the solution to a problem that I was just about to encounter, but because I was paying attention, it make it all a walk in the park.
I can’t count the number of times that I’ve had this experience: the blind luck of having just read or seen something that solves a problem I’m about to encounter. It’s a great feeling, and it’s one of the reasons that I’ve always read Hackaday – you never know when one hacker’s neat trick is going to be just the one you need next week. Indeed, that’s one of the reasons that we try to feature not just the gonzo hacks that drill down deep on a particular feat, but also the little ones too, that solve something in particular in a neat way. Because reading up on the hacks is free, and particularly cheap insurance against tomorrow’s unexpected dilemmas.

Le aziende appaltatrici della difesa statunitense stanno sviluppando uno strumento di intelligenza artificiale chiamato Cyber Resilience On-Orbit (CROO) per rilevare attacchi informatici ai satelliti monitorando direttamente il comportamento e i dati di telemetria dei sistemi satellitari in orbita. L’obiettivo è identificare comportamenti anomali sfruttando apprendimento automatico e intelligenza artificiale, per comprendere il vero stato dei satelliti oltre la semplice protezione dei link di comunicazione.
Lo strumento CROO è stato sviluppato da Proof Labs, una startup di sicurezza informatica spaziale con sede ad Albuquerque, New Mexico, con il contributo di Big Bear AI, azienda di soluzioni di intelligenza artificiale della Virginia, e Redwire Space Systems, impresa aerospaziale e di difesa della Florida. Il modello AI è addestrato usando telemetria satellitare sintetica ad alta fedeltà e altri dati generati da un modello digitale del satellite FireSat costruito da Redwire.
Big Bear AI ha compilato una serie temporale di 1,2 milioni di righe di dati modellando la telemetria di FireSat e altri dati sia in condizioni normali sia in caso di attacchi informatici. I dati includono tutte le informazioni elaborate dal software di volo del satellite, permettendo al modello di apprendere pattern di funzionamento ordinario e anomalie prodotte da scenari ostili.
Proof Labs evidenzia che le soluzioni di sicurezza finora si concentrano soprattutto sul lato terra della rete; la crittografia dei collegamenti satellitari protegge i dati in transito ma non difende il satellite né le funzioni a bordo. CROO mira quindi a rilevare o dedurre attacchi anche attraverso dati generati da dispositivi o sottosistemi non attaccati, con l’intento di prevenire attacchi sofisticati simili a Stuxnet.
CROO sarà distribuito come software e potrà anche essere implementato come hardware installabile sui satelliti; il lancio è previsto per il prossimo anno. Parte del finanziamento proviene da un contratto di ricerca e innovazione firmato con l’U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory nel 2024, e il cliente previsto dalla Space Force è lo U.S. Space Systems Command. Il software sarà proposto a operatori satellitari sia militari sia commerciali.
Secondo i responsabili tecnici, il set di telemetria include parametri come la velocità della ruota di reazione, la posizione del sensore stellare e l’angolo solare riportato dal sensore solare di bordo. Big Bear ha inoltre dichiarato l’intenzione di condividere i dati come repository su GitHub per permettere ad altri di addestrare propri modelli di intelligenza artificiale.
I progettisti sottolineano l’importanza di comprendere il comportamento reale dei componenti del satellite: attacchi simulati contro FireSat hanno preso di mira principalmente le batterie, scelte perché avrebbero generato rumore evidente nella telemetria. Gli attacchi selezionati e gli scenari simulati sono stati pensati per produrre cambiamenti fisici o digitali tali da essere rilevabili nel flusso di telemetria, permettendo a CROO di intercettare segnali di compromissione anche quando alcuni sottosistemi non sembrano compromessi.
Nebius (ex Yandex) ha annunciato un importante accordo con Microsoft Corporation per il leasing di unità di elaborazione grafica (GPU) per l’intelligenza artificiale. L’accordo riguarda la locazione di capacità in un data center nella città americana di Vineland (New Jersey).
Secondo i termini dell’accordo, Nebius fornirà a Microsoft potenza di calcolo in determinate tranche nel corso del 2025 e del 2026. A seconda del volume di energia fornito, il valore del contratto entro il 2031 potrebbe ammontare a 17,4 miliardi di dollari. Microsoft ha inoltre il diritto di acquistare ulteriore energia, il che aumenterebbe il valore del contratto a 19,4 miliardi di dollari.
Secondo i dettagli dell’accordo pubblicati sul sito web della Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) degli Stati Uniti, se Nebius non riuscirà a fornire la potenza di calcolo richiesta da Microsoft entro determinate date, Microsoft avrà il diritto di recedere dall’accordo.
Inoltre, sia Nebius che Microsoft possono recedere dal presente contratto se l’altra parte commette gravi violazioni sostanziali e non le corregge entro 60 giorni.
Un altro motivo di risoluzione del contratto è la liquidazione o il fallimento della controparte, che non venga risolto entro 30 giorni. Tuttavia, qualora il fallimento venga dichiarato ai sensi dell’Articolo 11 del Codice Fallimentare degli Stati Uniti, che prevede la riorganizzazione della società o il trasferimento dei suoi beni a una terza parte affidabile, questo non costituisce motivo di risoluzione del contratto.
Nebius è una società olandese originariamente chiamata Yandex. Storicamente, la società era proprietaria della società russa Yandex, il cui fondatore, Arkady Volozh, era il principale azionista di Yandex. CITTADINO CINESE FUGGITO DALL'ITALIA, ARRESTATO IN SPAGNA ANCHE GRAZIE ALLE RETE "ENFAST"
Un cittadino cinese evaso dalla Questura di Prato il 10 luglio scorso è stato catturato a Barcellona, in Spagna, ed estradato in Italia. Il fuggitivo è stato rintracciato dalla Squadra #FAST Italia (Fugitive Active Search Team) con il supporto delle reti di cooperazione internazionale di polizia #Eurojust ed #Europol/ENFAST. L'individuo ha utilizzato un passaporto autentico intestato a un altro cittadino cinese e si è affidato a una rete criminale per la logistica, il trasporto e il rifugio in diversi paesi europei. L'operazione, che ha visto la collaborazione tra le autorità italiane e spagnole, ha portato ad esecuzione con successo un Mandato di Arresto Europeo (#MAE), emesso dalla Procura di Prato. La Rete Europea delle Squadre per la Ricerca Attiva dei Fuggitivi (ENFAST) è una cooperazione di polizia degli Stati membri dell'Unione Europea, con il supporto di Europol, volta a rafforzare la sicurezza all'interno dell'UE localizzando e arrestando criminali ricercati a livello internazionale che hanno commesso reati gravi. La rete è stata istituita il 1° gennaio 2013, a seguito di un'iniziativa proposta nel 2010 in una conferenza a cui hanno partecipato 24 nazioni dell'Unione Europea, con l'obiettivo di consentire una collaborazione più efficiente tra le unità di polizia nazionali responsabili della ricerca attiva dei fuggitivi (FAST). #ENFAST è attiva 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7, consentendo alle sue squadre di intervenire immediatamente per localizzare e arrestare i fuggitivi. Welcome back to the Abstract! These are the studies this week that broke ice, broke hearts, and broke out the libations. Also, if you haven’t seen it already, we just covered an amazing breakthrough in our understanding of the cosmos, which is as much a story about humanity’s endless capacity for ingenuity as it is about the wondrous nature of black holes.
Scientists have discovered Arctic algae moving around with ease in icy environments of -15°C (5°F)—the lowest temperatures ever recorded for motility in a eukaryotic lifeform. While some simple microbes can survive lower temperatures, this is the first time that scientists have seen eukaryotic life—organisms with more complex cells containing a nucleus—able to live, thrive, and locomote in such chilly environments.
It’s amazing that these so-called “ice diatoms” can move around at all, but it’s even cooler that they do it in style with a gliding mechanism that researchers describe as a “‘skating’ ability.” Their secret weapon? Mucus threads (“mucilage”) that they use like anchors to pull themselves through frozen substrates.
“The unique ability of ice diatoms to glide on ice” enables them “to thrive in conditions that immobilize other marine diatoms,” said researchers led by Qing Zhang of Stanford University. Image: Prakash Lab Zhang and her colleagues made this discovery by collecting ice cores from 12 locations around the Arctic Chukchi Sea during a 2023 expedition on the research vessel Sikuliaq, which is owned by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Unfortunately, this is a research area that could be destroyed by the Trump administration, with NSF facing 70 percent cuts to its polar research budget.
If lifeforms are doing triple axels in Arctic ice on Earth, it’s natural to wonder whether alien organisms may have emerged elsewhere. To that end, scientists announced the discovery of a tantalizing hint of possible life on Mars this week. youtube.com/embed/ieJKWW8sp2A?… NASA’s Perseverance rover turned up organic carbon-bearing mudstones that preserve past redox reactions, which involves the transfer of electrons between substances resulting in one being “reduced” (gaining electrons) and one being “oxidized” (losing electrons). “This assessment is further supported by the geological context of the Bright Angel formation, which indicates that it is sedimentary in origin and deposited from water under habitable conditions,” said researchers led by Joel Hurowitz of Stony Brook University.
The team added that the best way to confirm the origin of the ambiguous structures is to bring Perseverance’s samples back to Earth for further study as part of the Mars Sample Return (MSR) program. Unfortunately, the Trump administration wants to cancel MSR. It seems that even when we have nice things, we still can’t have nice things, a paradox that we all must navigate together.
About 150 million years ago, a pair of tiny pterodactyls—just days or weeks old—were trying to fly through a cataclysmic storm. But the wind was strong enough to break the bones of their baby wings, consigning them to a watery grave in the lagoon below.
Now, scientists describe how the very storm that cut their lives short also set them up for a long afterlife as exquisitely preserved fossils, nicknamed Lucky and Lucky II, in Germany's Solnhofen limestone. Image: University of Leicester “Storms caused these pterosaurs to drown and rapidly descend to the bottom of the water column, where they were quickly buried in storm-generated sediments, preserving both their skeletal integrity and soft tissues,” said researchers led by Robert Smyth of the University of Leicester.
“This catastrophic taphonomic pathway, triggered by storm events, was likely the principal mechanism by which small- to medium-sized pterodactyloids…entered the Solnhofen assemblage,” they added.
While it’s sad that these poor babies had such short lives, it’s astonishing that such a clear cause of death can be established 150 million years later. Rest in peace, Lucky and Lucky II.
Trump’s aid cuts could cause millions of deaths from tuberculosis alone
The Trump administration’s gutting of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), carried out in public fashion by Elon Musk and DOGE, will likely cause millions of excess deaths from tuberculosis (TB) by 2030, reports a sobering new study.
“Termination of US funding could result in an estimated 10.6 million additional TB cases and 2.2 million additional TB deaths during the period 2025–2030,” said researchers led by Sandip Mandal of the Center for Modeling and Analysis at Avenir Health. “The loss of U.S. funding endangers global TB control efforts” and “potentially puts millions of lives at risk.”
Beyond TB, the overall death toll from the loss of USAID is estimated to reach 14 million deaths by 2030. The destruction of USAID must never be memory-holed as it is shaping up to be among the most deadly actions ever enacted by a government outside of war.
In more bad news, it turns out that the bacteria that’s responsible for making a lot of Earth’s oxygen is highly vulnerable to human-driven climate change. Prochlorococcus, the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth, is the source of about 20 percent of the oxygen in our biosphere. But rapidly warming seas could set off “a possible 17–51 percent reduction in Prochlorococcus production in tropical oceans,” according to a new study.
“Prochlorococcus division rates appear primarily determined by temperature, increasing exponentially to 28°C, then sharply declining,” said researchers led by François Ribalet of the University of Washington. “Regional surface water temperatures may exceed this range by the end of the century under both moderate and high warming scenarios.”
It’s possible that this vital bacteria will adapt by moving to higher latitudes or by evolving more heat-tolerant variants. But that seems like a big gamble on something as important as Earth’s oxygen budget.

Federal attacks on free speech are rightfully getting most of the headlines, but Georgia’s unprecedented attempt to prosecute dozens of “Stop Cop City” protesters as members of a racketeering enterprise was as frivolous as the worst of the Trump administration’s antics.
This week’s dismissal of conspiracy charges against these opponents of the Atlanta police training facility is welcome news. But it’s alarming that these charges lingered over 61 people’s heads for two years. And their ordeal likely isn’t over.
Ridiculous indictment
Rather than filing charges aimed at individual alleged acts of arson, vandalism, or other actual crimes, prosecutors tried to rope together dozens of activists into one sprawling case under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The indictment didn’t even attempt to connect the dots between most defendants’ constitutionally protected speech and a handful of defendants’ alleged bad acts.
Why would prosecutors want to do that instead of just charging the lawbreakers? Primarily, because the prosecution wasn’t intended to punish illegality but to kill a movement. Charging only those who broke actual laws wouldn’t achieve that aim, so they got to work making up new ones.
Secondarily, because they’re vindictive dirtbags. To prove it, they chose the date of George Floyd’s murder as the start date of their fabricated “conspiracy,” even though plans for Cop City hadn’t even been announced yet when Floyd was killed.
Prosecutors pointed to the defendants’ alleged anarchist political philosophy, their publications, their social media posts, their constitutionally protected recording of police, their use of encryption and VPNs to communicate securely, and even their holding news conferences and talking to reporters — all as “proof” that they were each part of a criminal enterprise.
The theory goes that, if one anarchist writes an essay about the environmental impact of Cop City and another anarchist sets a police car on fire, then both anarchists effectively struck the match together. Or something like that. It’s too incoherent to make any sense of.
Chilling effect on both journalists and sources
By the prosecution’s logic, journalists who covered the protests could be portrayed as helping to “advance” a RICO conspiracy simply by giving activists a platform. Write about the movement, and you (and your sources) might become part of the case file. This time, they only went after writers who participated in the Stop Cop City movement, but what about next time?
The harm extends beyond direct impact on reporters. Newsmakers and whistleblowers will surely be wary of talking to journalists if they know prosecutors view doing so — and particularly doing so securely via encrypted messaging — as an act in furtherance of a conspiracy.
This week’s win doesn’t undo the harm, either to free speech or to the defendants’ lives (many say they’ve been unable to find housing or jobs due to the long-pending case). The court’s forthcoming dismissal order seems likely to be limited to procedural grounds — prosecutors neglected to get required authorization from the governor to bring the charges. Deputy Attorney General John Fowler, the lead prosecutor on the case, said he’ll appeal.
Prosecutors must know they’re unlikely to ultimately secure a conviction, much less one that higher courts will uphold. Even if the appellate courts give them a path to get past this week’s procedural dismissal, they’ll still have to reckon with the Constitution and the fact that their legal and factual theories are as flimsy as they come.
But the longer they can stretch the case out, the longer uncertainty will linger about whether a law intended to counter organized crime can be distorted to stifle protest movements. And the more reluctant critics of Cop City will be to speak to journalists whose reporting might clarify the goals of their movement and contradict law enforcement narratives.
Plenty of experts have explained how RICO laws are rife with abuse, even when used for their intended purpose. The Cop City case makes clear that the need for reform isn’t just a criminal justice issue; it’s a free speech one as well.

Take action to stop attacks on journalists and transparency
People often ask how to support the causes we fight for other than donating. Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) has a new action center to allow you to do just that by writing or calling members of Congress to tell them that the public cares about press freedom.
This week we launched the first two actions — one to tell lawmakers to stop the decimation of the Freedom of Information Act and the other to encourage them to do something (besides the same old empty expressions of concern) about the massacre of journalists in Gaza. We plan to expand the action center, including by taking on locally targeted initiatives. Please use this easy, new tool to help us make a difference — and still donate if you can, of course.
CBS’s real bias monitor is Donald Trump
CBS announced this week that it’s hiring Kenneth Weinstein — a career partisan — as its “bias ombudsman.” FPF Director of Advocacy Seth Stern wrote for The Guardian that while CBS has a constitutional right to monitor bias as it sees fit, it’s a different story when the government gets involved.
The creation of the ombudsman role was one of many capitulations CBS’s owners made to the Trump administration to persuade the Federal Communications Commission to approve the Paramount-Skydance merger. And based on comments from the administration, it fully intends to use its foothold inside CBS’s newsroom to bend its reporting to its liking. Read more here.

Will 9/11 records be declassified?
Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and “a substantial body of records” about the event remains classified.
In theory, these records should automatically be declassified when they turn 25 in 2026. But this won’t happen with the 9/11 records, just as it hasn’t happened with other historically significant records, like the John F. Kennedy assassination records, which the public had to wait over 60 years to read.
Judge isn’t buying excuses for attacks on LA reporters
A group of journalists and others won a preliminary injunction in federal court on Sept. 11, 2025, placing new restrictions on the Los Angeles Police Department’s violent tactics while policing protests. The day before, they won a similar order against the Department of Homeland Security.

Comcast Executives Warn Workers To Not Say The Wrong Thing About Charlie Kirk
A company-wide email from Comcast executives, sent to everyone working at NBCUniversal on Friday morning, mourns right-wing pundit Charlie Kirk’s death and reminds employees that saying the wrong thing about Kirk’s legacy can get you fired swiftly.
The email, obtained by 404 Media and first reported by Variety, has the subject line “A message from Brian Roberts, Mike Cavanagh, and Mark Lazarus.” In it, the executives eulogize Kirk, calling him an “advocate for open debate, whose faith was important to him.”
Roberts is the Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation, Cavanagh is the president, and Lazarus is the prospective CEO of VERSANT, Comcast’s new spinoff that will include the majority of its NBCUniversal cable network portfolio. NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo and more journalistic and entertainment properties are under the NBCUniversal umbrella.
“You may have seen that MSNBC recently ended its association with a contributor who made an unacceptable and insensitive comment about this horrific event,” the executives wrote. “That coverage was at odds with fostering civil dialogue and being willing to listen to the points of view of those who have differing opinions.”

Political analyst Matthew Dowd was fired from MSNBC on Wednesday after speaking about Kirk’s death on air. During a broadcast on Wednesday following the shooting, anchor Katy Tur asked Dowd about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens,” according to Variety. Dowd answered: “He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”
MSNBC is a division of NBCUniversal. The letter from Comcast executives reiterates to current employees that their jobs are on the line if they stray from bland, milquetoast statements about a man who spent his life fomenting hate will have consequences on their careers. The entire mainstream media environment has been working overtime to sanitize Kirk’s legacy since his murder—a legacy that includes targeted harassment of professors at schools across the country and normalizing the notion that basic human rights are up for “debate.”

The tragic loss of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old father, husband, and advocate for open debate, whose faith was important to him, reminds us of the fragility of life and the urgent need for unity in our nation. Da ottobre 2023 il centro è stato oggetto di aggressioni, minacce, imbrattamenti, danneggiamenti, fino ad attacchi esplosivi, un altro a maggio scorso.
“Negli anni” dicono Perduca e Faustini “sono molte le iniziative dell’Associazione Luca Coscioni ospitate e co-promosse da chi anima il centro, un luogo aperto al pubblico che, tra le altre cose, offre sostegno alla popolazione bisognosa. Dal fine vita all’aborto, passando per testamento biologico, terapie psichedeliche e presentazioni di libri l’Associazione e la Cellula di Roma hanno sempre trovato ascolo e collaborazione. Ci auguriamo che quanto prima venga scoperto chi si è reso responsabile di questi attacchi”.
Abbiamo appreso solo da poco “scrivono Marco Cappato e Marco Perduca “che il 15 giugno scorso Baldomero Cáceres Santa María è morto a Lima all’età di 93 anni. Psicologo e ricercatore molto critico del ruolo che la psichiatria aveva giocato nella definizione dell’architettura proibizionista internazionale, Baldo era uno raro esempio di intellettuale antiproibizionista militante che non perdeva occasione per dimostrare come la proibizione della cannabis prima e della foglia di coca poi fossero non solo anti-scientifiche ma anche violazioni dei diritti umani e delle tradizioni e culture ancestrali.
“Abbiamo conosciuto Baldo alla fine degli anni ‘90 tramite Dave Borden della DRCNet Foundation, grazie alle sue conoscenze, nelle nostre visite in Perù abbiamo incontrato pensatori, parlamentari e campesinos determinati nella lotta per ricordare al mondo che “coca non è cocaina”.
Negli anni ’70, mentre viveva a Cusco e lavorava all’Università Nazionale di San Antonio Abad, incontrò l’etnostorico Jan Szemiski che gli insegnò a masticare le foglie di coca. Dopo aver scoperto la pianta e averne sperimentato i benefici che gli permettevano di ridurre mal di testa, insufficienza respiratoria e disturbi gastrici legati al cambio di altitudine, iniziò la sua ricerca sulla storia e le proprietà delle sue piante. Dopo la pubblicazione di un articolo intitolato “Coca, il mondo andino e gli estirpatori di idolatrie del XX secolo” sul quotidiano La Prensa nel 1977, iniziò la sua attività in difesa della foglia di coca.
“Baldomero aveva partecipato alla riunione fondativa della Lega Internazionale Antiproibizionista di Atene di 35 anni fa e da allora non ha perso occasione di perorare la causa della legalizzazione della marihuana e della foglia di coca. Baldo era uno degli ultimi intellettuali della memoria orale, auspichiamo che chi gli è stato vicino per anni possa trovare tempo e risorse per raggruppare il suo pensiero in modo multimediale”.
