'Shame Thrives in Seclusion:' How AI Porn Chatbots Isolate Us All
Noelle Perdue recently joined us on the 404 Media podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about AI porn, censorship, age verification legislation, and a lot more. One part of our conversation really resonated with listeners – the idea that erotic chatbots are increasing the isolation so many people already feel – so we asked her to expand on that thought in written form.
Today’s incognito window, a pseudo friend to perverts and ad-evaders alike, is nearly useless. It doesn’t protect against malware and your data is still tracked. Its main purpose is, ostensibly, to prevent browsing history from being saved locally on your computer.
But the concept of privatizing your browsing history feels old-fashioned, vestigial from a time when computers were such a production that they had their own room in the house. Back then, the wholesome desktop computer was shared between every person of clicking-age in a household. It had to be navigated with some amount of hygiene, lest the other members learn about your affinity for Jerk Off Instruction.
Even before desktop computers, pornography was unavoidably communal whether or not you were into that kind of thing. Part of the difficulty in getting ahold of porn was the embarrassment of having to interact with others along the way; whether it was the movie store clerk showing you the back of the store or the gas station cashier reaching for a dirty magazine, it was nearly impossible to access explicit material without interacting with someone else, somewhere along the line. Porn theaters were hotbeds for queer cruising, with (usually men) gathering to watch porn, jerk off and engage in mostly-anonymous sexual encounters. Even a lack of interaction was communal, like the old tradition of leaving Playboys or Hustlers in the woods for other curious porn aficionados to find. playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… With the internet came access, yes, but also privacy. Suddenly, credit card processing put beaded curtain security guards out of business, and forums had more centrefolds than every issue of Playboy combined. Porn theaters shut down—partially due to stricter zoning ordinances and 80’s sex-panic pressure from their neighbors, but also because the rise of streaming pay-per-view and the internet meant people had more options to stay in the comfort of their homes with access to virtually whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it.
Today, with computers in our pockets and slung against our shoulders, even browsing history has become private by circumstance. Computers are now “personal devices,” rather than communal machines—what we do with them is our business. We have no corporate privacy, of course; our data is being harvested at record volumes. Instead, in exchange for shipping off all our most sensitive information, we have tremendous, historically unheard-of interpersonal privacy. At least, Gen Z are likely the last generation to have embarrassing “my parents looked at my browsing history” anecdotes. We’ve left that information to be seen and sorted by Palantir interns.
Most recently in technology’s ongoing love-hate affair with porn, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced he was going to allow ChatGPT to generate erotica, joining hundreds of AI-powered porn platforms offering highly tailored generated content at the push of a button. youtube.com/embed/9eqMXBwWtkA?… Now, from the user’s perspective, there are no humans at any point in this interaction. The consumer is in their room, requesting a machine, and the machine spits out a product. You are entirely alone at every step of this process.
Other people can also provide a useful temperature check- I’m all for nonnormative sexuality and fantasy, but it’s good to get a tone read every once in a while on where the hungry animal has taken you. Strange things happen in isolation, and the dehumanization of sexual imagery by literally removing the human allows people to disconnect personhood from desire, a practice it serves us well to avoid. Compartmentalization of inner sexuality so far as to have it be completely disconnected from what another person can offer you (or what you can offer another person) can lead to sexual frustration at best and genuine harm at worst. This isn’t hypothetical; We know that chatbots have the power to lure vulnerable people, especially the elderly and young, away from reality and into situations where they’re hurt or taken advantage of in real life. And while real, human sex workers endure decades of censorship and marginalization online from industry giants that make it harder and harder to earn a living online, the AI chatbot platforms of the world push ahead, even exposing minors to explicit content or creating child sexual abuse imagery with seemingly zero consequence.
I don’t think anyone needs to project their porn use on the side of their house. Sexual boundaries exist for a reason, and everyone is entitled to their own internal world. But I do think in a period of increasing sexual shame, open communication is a valuable tool. Sex is human, sex is animal, sex is social. Even in periods of celibacy or self-pleasure, sexual desire connects us, person-to-person—even if in practice you happen to be connecting with your right hand.

La sua pubblicazione intende contribuire alla diffusione delle buone pratiche in materia di prevenzione e gestione delle emergenze, offrendo un riferimento operativo e uno spunto metodologico per la redazione di analoghi piani da parte di altre biblioteche e istituzioni culturali.

La tavola rotonda è dedicata a un approfondimento operativo sul tema dei tempi delle verifiche quale snodo centrale per l’effettività dei diritti riconosciuti dalla giurisprudenza costituzionale. Il confronto si concentra sui margini di intervento del legislatore e delle amministrazioni regionali nel definire procedure idonee a evitare ritardi non giustificati, senza compromettere le garanzie richieste dall’ordinamento.
Dopo le rivelazioni della piattaforma investigativa tedesca EXIF sugli eventi che si sono svolti tra Lonate Pozzolo e Bollate a novembre 2025, quando esponenti di movimenti e gruppi musicali di estrema destra che inneggiano apertamente al nazismo e alla violenza hanno trovato accoglienza negli spazi della Pro Loco cittadina per un concerto e un’assemblea, continua l’azione di Possibile per far sentire la voce di cittadine e cittadini che non ritengono accettabile ospitare tali realtà nel territorio provinciale.
Insieme ad altre associazioni della zona, abbiamo denunciato l’accaduto, a sottolineare che la provincia di Varese non resta in silenzio di fronte a manifestazioni d’odio e di razzismo, e abbiamo sostenuto le forze locali di Lonate Pozzolo nel ribadire che gli spazi cittadini devono rimanere espressione dei valori repubblicani, intrinsecamente antifascisti e antinazisti.
Ma la gravità dei fatti non permette di limitarsi ai livelli locali, pertanto Varese Possibile si unisce all’Onorevole Marco Grimaldi, parlamentare di Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra, nell’interrogazione parlamentare presentata il 9 gennaio al Ministro Piantedosi per chiedere che vengano prese misure affinché soggetti pregiudicati e realtà che vanno contro i principi democratici della nostra Costituzione antifascista non possano più trovare spazio in luoghi dedicati alla promozione di un territorio che ha partecipato con orgoglio alla Resistenza.

ARCTURUS was a research computer system developed on a shoestring budget at Sydney University in the 1960s, and was in service until 1975. Particularly the system was developed by [David Wong] as a part of his PhD thesis: The design and construction of the digital computers snocom, nimbus and arcturus (PDF). [David] worked in collaboration with [Kevin R. Rosolen] who is interviewed in the video.
The machine is described as a fixed-point, binary, parallel, single address, general-purpose digital computer using packaged diode-transistor circuits. Ferrite-core memory was used instead of drum memory because drum memory was too slow and performance was a high priority feature. For the same reason parallel features were implemented where serial might have been done more simply, if it hadn’t been so slow. In addition to the ferrite-core there were paper-tape peripherals and control panels.
The machine supported 32 distinct instructions and had a 13-bit address space allowing it to directly address 8,192 words, each word comprising 20-bits. Those word bits were one sign bit and nineteen magnitude bits for fixed-point two’s complement binary numbers.

It turns out, that mold is everywhere. The problem is when it becomes too much, as mold infestations can have serious health effects on both humans and animals. Remediation is extremely expensive, too. So there are plenty of benefits to finding mold early. Now, German researchers are proposing an electronic “nose” that uses UV-activated tin oxide nanowires that change resistance in the presence of certain chemicals, and they say it can detect two common indoor mold species.
The nanowire sensors can detect Staachybotrys chartarum and Chaetominumglobosum. The real work, though, is in the math used to determine positive versus negative results.
Traditional methods take some sort of physical sample that is sent to a lab and require days to process. However, trained dogs can also smell mold, but as you might expect, there aren’t many dogs trained to find mold. Besides, the training is expensive, you have to maintain the dog all the time, and if the dog knows what kind of mold it is, it can’t say. So an electronic nose that can give fast, specific results is quite attractive.
Even if you don’t care about mold, the data crunching to classify the sensor data has application to many types of sensors. They used training to build multiple models, then they combine the outputs using a regression algorithm to predict the true output. Finally, they use a majority voting technique to combine the results of the model and the regression output.
Could you make a sensor like this? Reading section 4.2 of the paper, it looks like you need a pretty stout set of lab gear to play. But the math ideas are certainly something you could replicate or use as a starting point for your own sensor fusion projects.

You’ve heard of wind tunnels– get some airflow going over a thingy, put some some smoke on, and voila! Flow visualization. How hard could it be? Well, as always, the devil is in the details and [toast] is down in there with him with this Hot-Wheels sized wind tunnel video.
To get good, laminar flow inside of a wind tunnel, there are important ratios to be followed– the inlet and outlet diameters must relate to the interior size to get the correct slope on the contraction and exhaust cones. You need a flow straightener on both ends. All of it can be easily 3D printed, as [toast] shows, but you have to know those design rules and pay attention to, which [toast] does… this time. One of his “don’t do this” examples in this video is previous build of his where he did not follow all the rules, and the difference is clear.
Now, unless you’re hooked on flow visualizations —guilty— or are a Hot-Wheels aficionado, since that’s what this wind tunnel is sized for, you probably won’t rush to gumroad to buy [toast]’s STLs. On the other hand, if you pay attention to the lessons [toast] has learned in this video you can apply them to wind tunnels of whatever size and construction technique you need, be it cardboard or junk box plastic and get a more stable result.
Over the decades the number of Linux distributions has effectively exploded, from a handful in the late ’90s to quite literally hundreds today, not counting minor variations. There lately seems to be a counter-movement brewing in response to this fragmentation, with Project Bluefin’s Distroless project being the latest addition here. Also notable are KDE’s efforts, with KDE Linux as its own top-down KDE-based distro, but now with a switch to BuildStream from Arch likely as a distroless move.
It should be clear that there is no obvious course here yet, and that opinions are very much divided. The idea of ‘Linux’ becoming a more singular OS appeals to some, while to others it’s the antithesis of what ‘Linux’ is about. This much becomes clear in [Brodie Robertson]’s exploration of this topic as well.
The way to think about ‘distroless’ is that there is a common base using the Freedesktop SDK on which the customization layer is applied, such as Bluefin, KDE or Gnome’s environments. You could think of this base as the common runtime, using the Freedesktop standards for interoperability for a user-selected layer that’s installed on top. This way the idea of basing a distro on a specific distro is tossed out in favor of something that’s vaguely reminiscent of the Linux Standard Base attempt at standardization.
It’ll be fascinating to see how things will move from here, as there are definite arguments to be made in favor of less fragmentation and resultingly less duplicated effort. In many ways this would bring Linux closer to for example FreeBSD, which avoids the Linux Chaos Vortex problem by having a singular codebase. FreeBSD ‘distros’ like GhostBSD and NomadBSD are therefore essentially just specialized customizations that target a sub-group of FreeBSD users.
Of course, when we start talking about package managers and other base-distro specific features, we may very well risk igniting the same problems that tore apart the LSB so many years ago. Will we also standardize on RPM over DEB package files and kin, or something else?
We suspect there are three kinds of people in the world. People who have access to a Michelson Interferometer and are glad, those who don’t have one and don’t know what one is, and a very small number of people who want one but don’t have one. But since [Longest Path Search] built one using 3D printing, maybe the third group will dwindle down to nothing.
If you are in the second camp, a Michelson interferometer is a device for measuring very small changes in the length of optical paths (oversimplifying, a distance). It does this by splitting a laser into two parts. One part reflects off a mirror at a fixed distance from the splitter. The other reflects off another, often movable, mirror. The beam splitter also recombines the two beams when they reflect back, producing an interference pattern that varies with differences in the path length between the splitter and the mirror. For example, if the air between the splitter and one mirror changes temperature, the change in the refraction index will cause a minute difference in the beam, which will show up using this instrument.
The device has been used to detect gravitational waves, study the sun and the upper atmosphere, and also helped disprove the theory that light is transmitted through a medium known as luminiferous aether.
The tolerances for such a device are tight, but within the capability of modern 3D printers. The CAD files are online. The key was the mirror mounts, which use springs and thumbscrews. So you do need some hardware and, oh yeah, a laser, although that’s not as hard to obtain as it once was. You obviously can’t 3D print the mirrors or the beam splitter either.
The post claims the device is cheap because the bill of materials was roughly $3, although that didn’t include the beamsplitter, which would bring the cost up to maybe $20. The device, in theory, could detect distance changes as small as one wavelength of the laser, which is around 650nm. Not bad for a few bucks.

Massachusetts – Preparations are actively being made for the 2026 Pirate National Conference in Boston. The conference will be hybrid with both in-person and online options to attend. The conference will take prior to the FIFA World Cup, and given Boston will play host, it is advised that those looking to attend book early before prices begin to rise. The conference will begin June 6th and is expected to conclude on the 7th. We WILL be on a boat for the conference.

2. Рамочная основа этического регулирования искусственного интеллекта
По мере того как искусственный интеллект (ИИ) и машинное обучение (МО) все глубже интегрируются в общественную инфраструктуру, рынок труда и судебные системы, пиратское движение осознает как преобразующий потенциал, так и экзистенциальные риски для неприкосновенности частной жизни и автономии личности. Необходимо обеспечить, чтобы ИИ служил инструментом расширения прав и возможностей человека, а не механизмом социального контроля или непрозрачного корпоративного доминирования. Мы признаем следующие основные принципы:
1. Прозрачность алгоритмов: Любая система искусственного интеллекта, внедряемая в государственном секторе или используемая для принятия важных частных решений (например, в сфере кредитования, трудоустройства или жилищного обеспечения), должна подлежать независимой государственной проверке. Базовая логика и обучающие наборы данных должны быть прозрачными, доступными и проверяемыми.
2. Право на участие человека в процессе принятия решения: Ни одно решение, коренным образом влияющее на правовой статус или средства к существованию человека, не должно приниматься исключительно автоматизированной системой. Граждане должны иметь юридически закрепленное право на содержательную проверку со стороны человека.
3. Запрет массового биометрического наблюдения: Мы выступаем за глобальный запрет на биометрическую идентификацию в режиме реального времени (например, распознавание лиц) в общественных местах как государственными, так и частными организациями.
4. Открытый исходный код как обязательное условие: для обеспечения безопасности и общественного доверия системы искусственного интеллекта, заказываемые или используемые правительствами, должны основываться на свободном и открытом программном обеспечении (FOSS).
Предлагаемые действия Генеральная Ассамблея поручает новому 16-му составу Совета воссоздать Постоянный комитет по политике в области ИИ. Этот комитет будет координировать международные усилия по продвижению этих принципов на уровне ООН и ЕС, особенно с Европейской пиратской партией, стремясь обеспечить их интеграцию в формирующиеся глобальные рамки и правила.

Пусть в Соединенных Штатах или любой другой стране не будет убежища для врагов свободы.

Fichissimo, applausi. Eppure serve farsi delle domande.
Martha era dentro da mesi. Aveva messo in piedi profili fasulli di donne ariane gestiti da chatbot e racconta che quegli uomini si erano innamorati. Mentre gli utenti flirtavano con l’intelligenza artificiale, lei raccoglieva dati e informazioni, trasformando un ambiente pensato per far incontrare persone in un dispositivo che espone identità e reti. Dalle sue analisi è emerso che la piattaforma era gestita da una persona con legami con ambienti suprematisti bianchi. WhiteDate veniva venduto come sito di appuntamenti, ma gli utenti erano quasi tutti uomini: il punto non pare la ricerca di partner, ma la costruzione di un network suprematista travestito da Tinder per ariani.
I membri della cosiddetta razza superiore si sono fatti fregare lasciando il sito senza protezioni adeguate. Un’infrastruttura che classifica, aggrega e rende operativi dati sensibili produce una forma di soft power che, se progettata male, si ribalta in una falla boomerang. Il Power Ranger Rosa non si è fermata alla distruzione: ha reso consultabili su okstupid.lol informazioni filtrate, mentre il dataset completo è stato condiviso attraverso canali dedicati a giornalisti e ricercatori. Esporre quei dati significa raccontare le persone: chi c’è dentro, come si descrive, come si colloca nello spazio, cosa cerca, a quale oggetto storico dichiara appartenenza.
WhiteDate stava in una galassia di siti tematici: WhiteDate (dating), WhiteChild (famiglia, ancestry e donazioni di sperma/uova per suprematisti bianchi) e WhiteDeal (networking professionale per razzisti).
Ed è interessante, non per i nazisti e basta. Perché quello che Martha Root ha mostrato non è che “la sicurezza faceva schifo” e stop, ma che un’infrastruttura di matching è, di fatto, una macchina che rende operativi dati sensibili: identità, preferenze, reti, geografia, appartenenze. E quando quella macchina si rompe, il potere che di solito esercita in silenzio diventa visibile.
Il punto è che non servono confessioni esplicite. Bastano i data proxy: segnali indiretti che, incrociati, ti profilano. Se mangio kosher “divento” ebreo nei modelli; se segno tutte le moschee “divento” musulmano; se posto “Black Lives Matter” finisco letto in modo diverso anche da sistemi assicurativi. È profilazione per deduzione: il dato sensibile non lo dichiari, lo lasci emergere dai contorni.
Per questo le policy non sono una cintura di sicurezza: cambiano, si reinterpretano, si aggirano. Il design invece è la decisione politica incorporata nell’architettura: cosa si collega, cosa si correla, cosa si esporta. Se una correlazione è tecnicamente possibile, prima o poi qualcuno la farà. È lo stesso motivo per cui, quando guardo infrastrutture pubbliche, mi interessa l’architettura politica oltre a quella tecnica: lo SPID nasceva con un’idea più decentralizzata proprio per evitare correlazioni tra Stato, portali e autenticazioni. Poi si è cambiata impostazione.
E la parte più inquietante è che non serve nemmeno un WhiteDate. Noi ci autoprofiliamo ogni giorno: i social sono un flusso continuo di segnali, e i metadati in foto e video sono boe, a volte coordinate vicino casa, con ricadute anche su chi vive con noi. Zuboff lo chiama capitalismo della sorveglianza: una raccolta diffusa in cui non sai quante aziende ti prendono, come ti incrociano e in quali liste finisci. Okstupid.lol è la versione “con la luce accesa”: lo stesso principio reso pubblico. Di norma le liste sono invisibili: non meno reali, meno consultabili.
okstupid.lol è spettacolare. Ma il suo spettacolo è una dimostrazione tecnica di quanto sia facile classificare e aggregare quando l’infrastruttura lo permette. E questa facilità, storicamente, non resta neutra. In Ruanda nel 1994 lo sterminio dei Tutsi fu facilitato anche da carte d’identità che classificavano le persone in base all’etnia. Negli anni Quaranta, dati del censimento vennero usati per localizzare e supportare misure di sorveglianza e internamento di persone di ascendenza giapponese dopo Pearl Harbor.
La tecnologia è un apparato amministrativo e informazionale piegato agli scopi di chi la possiede e del contesto politico. E il contesto politico cambia più velocemente delle policy. Per quanto apprezzi Martha Root, non la leggo come uno show: è un promemoria. Il potere dominante queste capacità le ha già, senza Power Ranger, senza exploit, con procedure, contratti standard e con quella cosa che mi piace tanto ma che in certi casi è un problema: l’interoperabilità.

Il prossimo 22 e 23 marzo, saremo chiamati a votare sul referendum confermativo della legge costituzionale sulla separazione delle carriere tra magistratura giudicante e requirente.
Attenzione: non si vota “sulla giustizia”, come vorrebbe far credere la propaganda governativa, ma su una riscrittura di equilibri fondamentali nel sistema democratico italiano.
E, come spesso accade, chi spinge per un “sì” vuole farlo nel silenzio generale. Il governo #Meloni ha fissato la data in modo da soffocare ogni discussione pubblica: poche settimane per comprendere, ancora meno per mobilitarsi, e praticamente zero tempo per un vero dibattito politico e culturale.
Non è casualità, ma strategia. La stessa logica autoritaria e paternalista che da tempo accompagna la retorica della “riforma necessaria”: si decide in alto, poi si chiede al popolo di ratificare in fretta, e possibilmente distratto.
Dietro la parola d’ordine “modernizzare la giustizia” si nasconde un intento tutt’altro che neutro. Separare le carriere significa indebolire il pubblico ministero, togliergli indipendenza, e spingerlo verso una subordinazione più diretta al potere politico.
Una magistratura spaccata in due diventa più controllabile, più docile, più allineata ai desideri del governo di turno. È un vecchio sogno che torna ciclicamente: quello di poter “telefonare” ai giudici senza trovare dall’altra parte un muro di autonomia.
Niente campagne istituzionali di approfondimento, niente confronto pluralista. Solo qualche dichiarazione autoreferenziale dei leader di governo e una valanga di slogan.
Il risultato? Gli italiani rischiano di presentarsi alle urne senza capire davvero cosa stiano votando.Ed è proprio così che si mina una democrazia: non cancellandola in un colpo solo, ma svuotandola di pensiero critico e partecipazione consapevole. Non lasciamoci confondere dal lessico tecnico o dalla propaganda “modernizzatrice”.
Questo referendum non migliora la giustizia, ma la imbriglia, la amputa, la rende più vulnerabile al potere. Chi crede ancora in una Repubblica delle garanzie e non delle sudditanze, deve dirlo con forza e chiarezza. Il 22 e 23 marzo votiamo NO, per difendere il diritto di tutti a una giustizia davvero libera, non di governo.

Nel 2019 una rivolta popolare della durata di 4 mesi ha costretto il dittatore sudanese Al-Bashir, alla guida dello stato dal 1989 cedere il potere. L'insurrezione è continuata anche sotto il successivo governo di transizione civile-militare, e non è cessata nemmeno dopo il colpo di stato militare del 2021, che ha rimesso al potere i generali. Nonostante la brutale repressione, l'autorganizzazione nei quartieri è continuata, creando spiragli di libertà in cui potesse prendere forma un modo di vivere libero da stato, poteri religiosi ed etnici. E' in questo contesto che è nata e ha agito la federazione anarchica del Sudan, incitando alla rivolta, organizzando distribuzioni di cibo, farmaci e beni di prima necessità. Il moto rivoluzionario è continuato fino al 2023, quando lo scoppio della guerra civile tra i due generali al potere, l'ha soffocata nel sangue, diffondendo, come ogni guerra, stupri, massacri e distruzione. Da quasi 3 anni i signori della guerra, con il supporto finanziario e militare di vari attori esteri, cinicamente assetati di risorse, si combattono. Le stime, probabilmente al ribasso, parlano di 150 000 morti/e e 15 milioni di sfollati/e. I compagni e le compagne sudanesi tentano di sopravvivere e resistere in questo contesto brutale, senza prendere parte per uno o l'altro signore della guerra, costrettx a imbracciare le armi, anche a costo della vita. Lo stato italiano e l'unione europea hanno la loro parte, avendo finanziato e addestrato le milizie RSF in funzione anti migranti, e ampliando il commercio di armi con gli Emirati Arabi, uno dei principali sponsor della guerra in Sudan.

First, scientists have yet again spotted a bizarre object in space that has never been seen before—the universe just keeps serving them up. Then: news from the biggest star in the sky, a tale of eavesdropping dogs, and a jellyfish sleepover.
Astronomers have glimpsed a new type of cosmic object—a starless clump of dark matter that never quite worked up the oomph to become a galaxy. Known as Cloud-9, the entity is located about 14 million light years away and likely provides the first look at an ancient dark matter halo.
Dark matter, as you may have heard, is weird stuff that has never been directly detected or identified, but nonetheless accounts for almost all matter in the universe. In the early universe, clumps of dark matter formed halos that attracted gas, sparked star formation, and evolved into the first galaxies. But while all galaxies appear to have dark matter halos, not all dark matter halos turned into galaxies.
Scientists have long speculated that some halos may have never accumulated the right amount of mass to make a star-studded galaxy. For years, astronomers have searched for the gravitational signatures of these dark starless “failed galaxies,” which are known as Reionization-Limited H I Clouds (RELHICs).
Now, a team reports that the first clear RELHIC candidate ever discovered, providing support for the standard model of cosmology, also known as the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, which is the current working framework of the universe. Image: Anand, Gagandeep S. et al. “The abundance of halos far exceeds that of known galaxies, implying that not all halos are able to host luminous galaxies,” said researchers led by Gagandeep S. Anand of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. “This has been interpreted to mean that galaxies only form in halos that exceed a ‘critical’ mass.’”
“Our results make Cloud-9 the leading RELHIC candidate,” the team continued. “This provides strong support for a cornerstone prediction of the Lambda cold dark matter model, namely the existence of gas-filled starless dark matter halos on subgalactic mass scales, and constrains the present-day threshold halo mass for galaxy formation.”
Cloud-9 might one day accumulate enough mass to pass the threshold for star formation, allowing it to eventually graduate into a galaxy. But for now, it is a galaxy school flunkie.
WOH G64, one of the largest stars in the sky, is nearing its death. At about 2,000 times the size of the Sun, this supergiant would extend beyond Saturn if it were placed in our solar system.
Scientists have speculated that the recent dimming of the senescent star might signal a transition from a red supergiant to a yellow hypergiant, making it one step closer to supernova. But a new study reveals evidence that WOH G64 “is currently a red supergiant” and its changing light may be influenced by a companion star in orbit around it, making this a binary system. Calçada “For a long time, WOH G64 was known as the most extreme red supergiant outside our Galaxy,” said researchers led by Jacco Th. van Loon of Keele University. “However, in a matter of years it has faded” and “its pulsations have become suppressed.”
“We have presented evidence that the remarkable changes witnessed in the 21st-century in the optical brightness and spectrum of the most extreme known extragalactic red supergiant, WOH G64 may be due to binary interaction,” the team continued, noting that “we may be witnessing the birth of a…supernova progenitor.”
Fortunately, this time bomb is located 160,000 light years away, so we are well beyond the blast radius. Whenever WOH G64 does explode, the supernova could be bright enough to see with the naked eye from Earth, despite its location far outside the Milky Way.
It’s not your imagination: Your dog might actually be a really good listener. While it’s well-known that dogs respond to a variety of commands, researchers have now demonstrated that some pooches, known as Gifted Word Learners, can pick up new words just by passively overhearing their owners’ conversations.
Over a series of experiments, researchers gave dogs fun toys to play with, which their owners then named in conversations that were not directed at the dogs. The pets were then able to identify the toys by the labels at a rate significantly above what would be expected by chance, even though they had never been directly taught the words. Image: Don Harvey The findings suggest that some dogs may have sociocognitive skills parallel to young toddlers, and further confirms that a variety of animals can demonstrate various degrees of language comprehension. But the best part is the following detail about how the effervescent joy of dogs was accounted for in the experimental design.
“Because dogs are neophilic and often get excited by new toys, we gave them ample opportunities to interact with the toys without hearing their labels,” said researchers led by Shany Dror of University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
Science completed? Check. Dogs got loads of playtime? Check. Win-win.
We’ll close by yawning and going back to bed—a waterbed in this case, because this is a story about the sleep cycles of marine animals. To probe the broader evolutionary purpose of sleep, scientists monitored periods of slumber and wakefulness in the upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda and the anemone Nematostella vectensis.
The results revealed that these animals had remarkably similar sleeping habits to people. “Like humans, both species require a total of approximately 8 hours of sleep per day,” said researchers led by Raphaël Aguillon, who conducted the work at Bar-Ilan University, and is now at IBPC Paris-Sorbonne University.
“Notably, similar to findings in primates and flies, a midday nap was also observed in C. andromeda,” the team added.
Talk about sleeping with the fishes! The upshot of the study is that sleep has evolved across all animals with a nervous system to help repair damaged DNA, a benefit that is apparently worth the vulnerability of a resting state. But for our weekend purposes, my takeaway is that even jellyfish enjoy a midday nap, so go ahead and take that siesta.

EMANUEL: I’ve seen a lot of terrible videos in my years online but by far the most upsetting type of video shows police using excessive force and especially videos of police killing people. There are more graphic videos from battlefields and other dark corners of the internet but what happened to Renee Nicole Good this week could happen to anyone living in America, and when I imagine the tragedy that has been visited on her loved ones I can’t help but imagine how easily I or anyone I care about can find ourselves in the same situation.
